Anthony Volpe’s homer overturned in Yankee Stadium fan controversy

If you’re feeling a sense of deja vu watching the Yankees in the playoffs, you’re not alone.

Anthony Volpe hit a deep fly into left field in the bottom of the sixth inning of ALDS Game 3, which was originally ruled a game-tying, two-run homer.

However, a fan in the left field seats reached over the left field wall and interfered with the ball as Rays outfielder Victor Mesa Jr. attempted to make a leaping grab.

After a lengthy review, the umpires decided the fan had interfered, and Volpe was awarded with an RBI double.

The Rays ended the inning in the lead, 4-3.

It was eerily reminiscent of the infamous Jeffrey Maier incident during the 1996 ALCS when the then-young fan aided a Derek Jeter homer.

In Game 1 of the 2024 World Series, a fan at Dodger Stadium interfered with a Gleyber Torres long fly that was ultimately ruled a double.

Two fans later in the Fall Classic that year also grabbed a foul ball out of Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts’ glove and were removed and banned from all MLB ballparks.
