‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: “A Portion of My Soul”
Claire’s parents reunite in the past once again on Blood of My Blood. But Henry’s dalliance with Seema threatens more than their relationship on the eve of war.
Henry (Jeremy Irvine) pops up at the stones at Craigh na Dun and is immediately captured by the Grants. Arch Bug (Terence Rae) is all set to kill him when Arch’s wife Murdina (Sorcha Groundsell) stops him. Looking at the marks the electroconvulsive therapy left on Henry’s head, she assumes he was touched by the Fair Folk. She doesn’t want Arch to risk the faeries’ curse since she believes they were responsible for their son’s death. Arch listens to his wife (Outlander fans know he’s devoted to a fault) and lets Uncle Mac (Simon Merrells) do Henry’s disciplining. Uncle Mac decides to keep Henry as the Grant bladier but orders 20 lashes for “kidnapping” Julia and baby. Heeding his wife, Arch feigns hitting Henry. But while Henry may have lucked out with Arch, Uncle Mac orders Henry to go to war with the Grants, who are on the British side.
Speaking of the British side, Ellen (Harriet Slater) and Grace (Ruby Fubara) make it to Fraser camp to warn Brian (Jamie Roy) that his dad is a turncoat. Brian confronts Lord Lovat (Tony Curran) for choosing land and titles over honor. Simon criticizes his bastard son for picking the MacKenzies over his own family — even calling Ellen a c-word! He tells Brian he will not belong to his clan once his title is restored by the British.

Ellen, Grace, Brian, and Murtagh (Rory Alexander) meet up with Dougal (Sam Retford) and tell him about Simon’s trap. Ellen also breaks the news that their sister Janet is dead. Rather than attack Simon, Brian advises that they ride south to join Mar’s forces at Perth. Though Dougal is hesitant to trust Brian, he agrees, but says they will settle what’s between them if they both survive the war. Meanwhile, Simon arrives in Inverness unopposed and takes it for the Crown.
Julia (Hermione Corfield) is having a swell time at Leathers without her horrible husband when a Grant courier brings a letter saying Henry has returned. She’s gleeful that her real husband is back in the 18th century and, with the help of Davina (Sara Vickers), disguises herself as a man — complete with a blade that belonged to Brian — to go visit him. Unfortunately, Seema (Lauren McQueen) overhears the news of Henry’s return.

Julia successfully reunites with Henry at Bowmont, where he explains he landed in the Inverness Lunatic Asylum and the doctors treated him with ECT. Julia asks if he made it to Claire in London and… Henry has no idea what she’s talking about. Uh-oh. A bewildered Julia shares details about their 6-year-old daughter and his memory comes flooding back. Henry reasons that while the doctor had been trying to erase his worst memories of World War I, his most painful memory was that of not being with Claire, so that’s what he lost. Between the fact that Henry completely forgot their daughter in the future and the bombshell that Henry slept with Seema, Julia understandably needs a moment to herself.
At the MacKenzie camp, Hugh Cameron (Bryan Dick) — the cousin to Jocasta’s husband John (Alastair Mackenzie) — schemes to protect John from the English’s retaliation, believing the Jacobite Rising will fail. The inclusion of Hugh is interesting since Outlander fans know he will play a bigger part in Jocasta’s life later on. For his part, John is more focused on forcing his maid Grace to have sex with him, which Murtagh sees.
Ellen and Brian get some quality time in his tent, and she tells him that she’s pregnant. He’s initially worried he won’t be a good dad since his father is literally the worst, but Ellen assuages that fear by pointing to how Brian chose her over Simon. The excited parents-to-be have sex. Butts abound.
Also getting cozy are Murtagh and Grace by the fire, though he takes a step too far when he puts his tartan over her shoulders. To make matters worse, Hugh Cameron caught the interaction and will most likely report it back to his rapist of a cousin, John. The next morning, Murtagh apologizes for being bold, but Grace says she wasn’t offended and sews a white fabric flower (like her mother used to make) into his sleeve. Aw, their love is blossoming.

As for Julia and Henry, things are a little less happy. Henry admits to sleeping with Seema, believing she was Julia in his grief. Since he had been told she was dead, Julia can understand the mistake, but she can’t understand why he didn’t tell her. She asks Henry to return to the person he was when he wrote letters from the trenches of WWI. (Seems Julia doesn’t have a great grasp of PTSD, fitting for her time.) With him headed for war in the morning, she lets everything go for the time being and sleeps with her husband.
Afterward, Julia shares that the seer Maisri said she couldn’t travel through the stones. Henry dismisses that since she traveled before — not thinking that perhaps baby William in utero was why Julia could go through. With Mrs. Graham’s knowledge that time travelers need gemstones, he makes a plan to get three gemstones for him, Julia, and William, and slip away during the war to try to get to their own time again. Julia gives him a letter signed with their trademark S.W.A.K. to send him to war with, but she wants no letters in return: “You come back yourself, whole. That is the only message that I will accept.” As he heads out, he sees Arch say a tender goodbye to Murdina, and Henry and Arch make an uneasy (and unlikely) alliance.
Ellen and Brian also wish each other farewell, with Ellen making Brian swear he’ll return to her and the baby before leaving for Leoch with Grace. But Brian has more than the battles ahead to worry about since his father’s manservant Balloch (Chick Allan) is spying on him! Did he happen to catch Brian touching Ellen’s belly?!
Also not safe is Julia. She returns home to find William not in his cradle and Davina nowhere to be found. Seema approaches and is crazed with jealousy over Henry. With the knife Davina had given Julia in her hand, Seema says she loved Henry and Henry loved her back. She then proceeds to lock Julia in with her. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but too bad Lord Lovat isn’t around.
So with Brian and Julia in direct peril (not to mention baby William!), war isn’t the only thing threatening Jamie and Claire’s parents’ happiness on Blood of My Blood.
