Philly cop killed in weekend ‘ambush’ was a married father of two young kids

A Philadelphia police officer killed in “a brutal, senseless, horrific” ambush in which a colleague was also shot 12 times was a married father of two young children, his department said.

Shane Seiber, 40, was shot three times and died later in the hospital after responding to reports of an armed man on a porch early Saturday morning in West Philadelphia.

“He fought valiantly, but he lost his life today,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told a news conference later Saturday

He described the shooting as “a brutal, senseless, horrific killing.”

Seiber, who died in the hospital surrounded by his wife and family, leaves behind a daughter, 3, and a son, 7, according to police.

His unidentified police partner — a father of five — was shot 12 times and is now in stable condition, said Bethel.

“He’s not out of the woods yet,” he warned.

The pair were shot after entering an address in West Philly shortly after midnight in what police described as an “ambush.”

The suspected shooter fled down an alley after the shooting before opening fire on nine more responding officers, none of whom were hit, District Attorney Larry Krasner told a news conference on Saturday.

Eric Lewis, 35, was arrested hours later while hiding up a tree, and now faces roughly 80 separate charges, including murder and 10 counts of attempted murder, Krasner said.
