An aspiring LA 2028 Olympian lost her home to the devastating storm over the weekend after Tropical Storm Rachel battered the Long Beach coast.

Paris Porter, who is aiming to sail for Team USA in the 2028 Olympics, posted a heartfelt video this week mourning the loss of her beachfront abode.

“You know that house you constantly see half-crumbled in the news, drone shots, and viral posts of the Long Beach Peninsula? Well, that was our home 💔 Three hurricane swells in six weeks in Southern California? Unheard of…, she wrote.

“Seeing the destruction, not only to our house but to everyone around us, breaks our hearts,” she added.

Porter said she was renting the home and was starting her life with her husband, RJ Porter. The couple shared videos of waves smashing into the coast and reminisced about their life in the home.

“To see three storms undo a place that brought so much peace is devastating, especially knowing how deeply it impacts our neighbors who lost so much more. The peninsula will always hold a special place in our hearts,” they wrote.

Hurricane Rachel slammed into SoCal over the weekend, decimating homes along Long Beach’s Alamitos Peninsula. At least eight buildings representing 13 addresses were red-tagged as unsafe to enter, while another was yellow-tagged, allowing residents limited access to retrieve their belongings, according to Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson.

Porter said she and her husband have taken up refuge in temporary housing for the next eight months as they figure out their next steps.

Her video mourning her home went viral. Porter said she made the video “as a way to reflect” and thanked viewers for their positivity.

“We know we will be okay moving forward and that is lucky, and we don’t take it for granted,” she wrote.

“The collapse began when [Hurricane] Marie came” in early September, Long Beach Fire Department spokesperson Melanie Miller said. Instagram/@parishenken

“The collapse began when [Hurricane] Marie came” in early September, Long Beach Fire Department spokesperson Melanie Miller said, “and it’s been building off of that. Then Hurricane Polo, now Rachel. It’s been continuous damage since then.”

“There have been preparations — we even deployed 3,000-pound sandbags,” Miller added, “but you can only do so much during low tide; there are limited windows of opportunity. And the dynamics are working against you.”

Richardson said the city was taking the situation “very seriously” and that it highlighted “an importance to be incredibly serious in our region and in our state around climate resilience and coastal resiliency.”
