Disneyland destroys 71-year-old piece of park history

Disneyland has demolished another piece of its history as the “Happiest Place on Earth” plows ahead with a massive expansion.

The final two ticket booths on the eastern side of the Southern California theme park’s main entrance in Anaheim have been bulldozed, wiping out structures that date back 71 years.

Aerial images captured from the Disneyland monorail and shared on social media Tuesday showed the destruction behind construction walls in the Esplanade area. The once-familiar booths have been reduced to piles of wood and concrete, Inside the Magic reported.

Crews demolished four other ticket booths earlier this year between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park, also on the eastern side of the entrance. That left just two — and now those are gone, too.

The demolition comes as Disney moves forward with a sweeping overhaul of its resort, including a planned Porto’s Bakery location in the Downtown Disney District, WDW News Today reported.

The beloved Los Angeles-area bakery was founded by Cuban immigrants who opened their first shop in Echo Park in the 1970s. The business has since grown to six locations, with a seventh planned at Disneyland.

Porto’s shared an artist’s rendering of the new location on Instagram last year, showcasing a sprawling design with outdoor seating across two floors.

“Serving up a fresh new view of what’s to come… Construction is officially underway for the all-new Porto’s Bakery & Café coming to Downtown Disney District!”

The changes are part of Disneyland Forward, a major expansion initiative announced in 2024 that promises to transform how visitors enter and navigate the resort.

Plans include a new pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard “leading to an all-new esplanade arrival experience,” according to Disney’s latest project update.

The proposal also calls for a new parking structure and transportation hub with “6,000 parking spaces, dedicated shuttle and rideshare areas, security screening and dedicated access for traffic off of Disney Way, improving parking and traffic flow throughout the resort area.”

Disneyland’s expansion plans extend well beyond the entrance. The latest announced projects include an expansion of Avengers Campus, with new attractions expected to open in 2028, along with a “Coco” attraction and an “Avatar” experience.
