‘Street Fighter’ and ‘Clayface’ kick off Skydance film era — will they be a success?

The first two films from Skydance’s merged mega-studio, “Street Fighter” and “Clayface,” are shaping up to be modest wins, according to the latest tracking numbers.

Both films — one a video game adaptation and the other a “horror-adjacent” movie from the world of “Batman” — are expected to pull in about $30 million in their opening weekends.

Out on Friday is “Street Fighter.” The experts at Boxoffice Pro tell us the film is looking at a debut weekend total of $25 million to $35 million, with expectations solidly at $30 million.

Says Boxoffice Pro guru Daniel Loria: “It’s relying heavily on millennial nostalgia in its marketing, leading us to believe it will perform in line with another similar marketing angle taken with Amazon MGM’s ‘Masters of the Universe’ earlier this year, a film that opened to $29 million.”

Loria is also comparing the title to Warner Bros.’ gamer sequel, “Mortal Kombat II,” which opened to $38 million earlier this year.

“Clayface” is opening the following weekend, and has been getting major online buzz.

But, “We’re expecting a modest debut for ‘Clayface,’ currently tracking at $25 million – $30 million for opening weekend,” Loria says. That’s “bound to change once we see a marketing push in the coming weeks,” that could move the total opening tally to $35 million. The film only cost $40 million.

“Although it’s a DC property, there really isn’t much here for us to size this up against WB’s other DC Comics titles,” says Loria. “In fact, the closest comps are likely the Sony ‘Spider-Man’ villain spin-offs, which isn’t exactly great company. Add the fact it’s an R-rated, horror-adjacent film — and you’re looking at a fraction of the audience of a traditional superhero film.”

Loria says the final take could “put more pressure on [next] summer’s ‘Superman’ sequel to deliver in terms of box office returns.”

Then again, “Clayface” has been getting positive online comparisons to “Obsession.” The film had a buzzy premiere this week in Hollywood.
