Is the Elon Musk Documentary ‘Musk’ Streaming on Netflix, Prime Video or HBO Max?
The Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney—known for documentaries like Taxi to the Dark Side, Citizen K, and The Dark Money—has turned his investigative attention to Elon Musk, a foreign tech billionaire with unprecedented power and influence on the U.S. government.
Gibney’s new buzzy documentary, Musk, will expand to more theaters nationwide this weekend. The film first premiered at Venice Film Festival in September, where it was met with critical acclaim. Musk himself refused to participate in the films, but other interviews include his ex-wife Justine Musk, his child custody rival Ashley St. Clair, journalists Kara Swisher and Zoë Schiffer, and engineers Martin Eberhard and Geoffrey Hinton.
According to an AP News report, the real Musk is furious about the film. Musk has posted on X (the social media platform known as Twitter, until Musk bought it and changed the name) calling Gibney an “idiot,” a “horrible human,” a “shill for the far left,” and a “tinfoil hat crackpot.”
That’s how you know it’s good! Musk seems like an important film to watch, and the best way to do that is by going to see it in theaters. But if you’d rather wait to watch it at home, here’s what we know about when and where the Musk documentary will be streaming.

Where to watch the Elon Musk documentary Musk:
For now, Musk is only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens nationwide in theaters in the U.S. on Friday, October 16. (The film already opened in select theaters last week.) You can find a showing near you via Fandango. Musk is not yet available to watch online or on streaming.
Is the Elon Musk movie Musk streaming on Netflix or Prime Video?
Musk is not streaming on Netflix or Prime Video right now. While it’s possible Musk may stream on Netflix someday, it won’t be until after the theatrical run and digital release of the movie. Musk is not a Netflix original—it’s an independent film being distributed by Bleecker Street in the U.S.
You will be able to purchase Musk on Prime Video eventually, when the movie becomes available to buy and rent on digital, but you will most likely not be able to stream Musk on Prime Video free with a Prime subscription any time soon, because it is not a Prime original movie. If you want to watch Musk movie at home, you’ll have to wait for the film to be available to buy or rent on digital platforms.
Based on other Bleecker Street releases, Musk will likely be available to buy and rent on digital around early November 2026, or about three weeks after the movie opens in theaters.
When will the Elon Musk documentary Musk be streaming free on HBO Max?
We know that Musk will be streaming on HBO Max after it’s theatrical run, but we don’t yet know the Musk HBO Max streaming release date.
Back in 2023, HBO Documentary Films pre-bought the North American and TV streaming rights to the documentary, according to Deadline. That means that even though the film is being released in theaters by Bleecker Street, and even though Bleecker Street doesn’t currently have any overall deals with any one streamer, we know that the first place to stream Musk will be HBO Max.
Again, we don’t know, when, exactly that will be. But another Bleecker Street film, Fackham Hall, went on to stream on HBO Max about three months after the movie opened in theaters. If Musk follows a similar schedule, you might see it on HBO Max in three months, around January 2027.
If you’re new to HBO Max, you can sign up for as low as $10.99/month with ads, but an ad-free subscription will cost $18.49/month.
If you want to stream even more and save a few bucks a month while you’re at it, we recommend subscribing to one of the discounted Disney+ Bundles with Hulu and HBO Max. With ads, the bundle costs $19.99/month and without ads, $32.99/month.
All that said, Gibney himself has said it’s a possibility that the new CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HBO Max, David Ellison, might block the HBO Max release of the film, because Ellison’s father, Larry, has personal ties to Musk.
“Would Musk be able to call Larry or David and say, you know, don’t put this doc on? Yeah,” Gibney said in an interview with the AP. “We live in that world now, particularly a world that’s become so transactional in the political realm … it’s literally pay to play.”
If you want to watch Musk right away, you can go catch the movie in theaters.
