Clippers announce jersey swap for fans in Opening Night twist
The Clippers are trying to rebuild its relationship with the fanbase.
The team’s latest announcement allows the first 4,000 fans that attend Opening Night to swap an old Clippers jersey for a new one. The home opener on Oct. 21 will have a special twist for fans as the team kicks off a new era.
The summer was not kind to the organization as the NBA punished the Clippers for violating its salary cap circumvention rules. The team was stripped of five first-round picks, fined $30 million and owner Steve Ballmer was handed a year-long suspension.
At Clippers media day, interim president of basketball operations Trent Redden opened the event with an apology to fans.
“Our fans deserve to hear from us before this, and for that we’re sorry,” Redden said Monday. “We’ve been listening to the thoughts, the concerns, and feeling the emotions of our fan base. They mean everything to us. … We hope to fulfill our promises to them, to build their trust and move forward through this time.
“This franchise often has done its best work with its back against the wall … We hope to represent our fans the same way we always have in dark times, by coming out fighting.”
It appears the latest announcement by the time is another effort by the Clippers to regain the trust of its fans. It’ll be interesting to see how many Kawhi Leonard jerseys are swapped for new ones on Opening Night.
