Ancient bridge hidden beneath Chinese lake resurfaces after water levels fall

A nearly 400-year-old granite bridge has re-emerged from Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, eastern China, as water levels decline. Known as the Qianyan, or “Thousand-Eye” Bridge, the 1.65-mile structure features 949 piers and 948 openings. Built during the Ming Dynasty, the bridge once served as an important crossing for communities on both sides of the lake. It becomes visible when the lake’s water level drops below 34.4 feet and is submerged again during the high-water season.
