Kansas City Chiefs star defensive lineman Chris Jones caught in screaming match with coaches on sidelines

The Kansas City Chiefs are once again heading towards yet another AFC West division title and likely Super Bowl win, but you’d never know it by how their sideline looked on Sunday.

The Chiefs hosted the 0-5 Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday afternoon, and the game pretty much went as expected. LA’s hapless offense wasn’t able to move the ball with any consistency and the Chiefs’ offense imposed their will, outside two turnovers.

While the outcome might never have been in doubt, for whatever reason, one of the team’s best defensive players wasn’t happy about something on the Kansas City sideline.

With his team ahead 9-3 in the second quarter, Chris Jones, the Chiefs’ star defensive tackle, sat down on the Kansas City bench. Joe Cullen, the team’s defensive line coach, came over to talk to him, putting his hand on Jones’ shoulder, as coaches are wont to do.

Bizarrely, Jones wasn’t happy about it, immediately shoving Cullen’s hand off him and starting a screaming match.

Trent Green, calling the game as an analyst for CBS, said on the broadcast that he believes Jones and Cullen “have a great relationship.”

As for what the disagreement was about, Green speculated that he didn’t “think Chris liked the fact that he put his hand on his shoulder.” He added that instead of immediately getting physical, Jones should have “asked him politely to take it off.”

It’s still unclear what exactly the fight was over. Cullen coached Jones for the past five seasons, starting in 2022. During those five years, Jones has been first-team All-Pro three times, made the Pro Bowl each season, and won two Super Bowls. Not a bad resume together.

After the game, Jones was seen walking off the field with tight end Travis Kelce, seemingly no worse for wear.

The Chiefs went on to win Sunday’s game 22-6, because of course they did. The schedule gets a little harder with a road trip to play the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field Sunday night, though given how dominant they’ve been, Kansas City seems likely to coast their way to another deep playoff run. Fully putting the fluky one-score losses during the 2025 season behind them.

As long as their players and coaches can get along while they’re winning, that is.
