National Guard member shot while trying to stop Washington DC fight
A National Guardsman was injured after being shot while trying to break up a fight in Washington DC.
The unidentified Guardsman was shot in the leg after rushing to stop a brawl that had unfolded on the sidewalk in Capitol Hill’s Eastern Market neighborhood at around 11:10 p.m. Sunday, DC cops revealed.
The injured guardsman was among seven to eight personnel that attempted to stop the late night dust up.
A man involved in the fight then “pulled out a firearm and began shooting,” Jeffrey Carroll, the Metropolitan Police interim police chief, told reporters.
“The National Guard members told the individual to drop the firearm. He discharged a round at the National Guard members who returned fire at that suspect,” the cop added.
The wounded guardsman was shot in the leg while the shooter was struck in the abdomen. The injuries are non life-threatening and both are being treated in DC area hospitals.
Police say they would like to speak with anyone involved in the fight, with cops still investigating the motive.
There is no further threat to the public, cops said.
