CBS News correspondent apologizes, deletes post praising heckler who questioned El-Sayed on Muslim Brotherhood

A CBS News correspondent apologized and deleted a post praising a heckler who questioned whether left-wing Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has an allegiance to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Jan Crawford, chief legal correspondent at CBS News and a frequent contributor to the network’s morning and evening news shows, wrote Sunday: “Earlier, I tweeted a video from an Abdul El-Sayed town hall. I deleted that tweet because it was a violation of CBS News standards. I apologize.”

In the since-deleted post, Crawford lauded a man known as “Tommy” who asked El-Sayed to denounce the terror-designated Islamist group.

“Tommy, thank you. I had to watch this twice to catch Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s nanosecond ‘yeah absolutely’ response,” she wrote above a re-post of the viral video.

“His subsequent uninterrupted three-minute diatribe proving your exact point is the kind of spectacular self own [sic] most ppl [sic] only dream about triggering. Congrats.”

During the town hall, Tommy asked El-Sayed to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. El-Sayed’s opponent, Republican Mike Rogers, a former House Intelligence Committee chairman and ex-FBI special agent, has tried to link the lefty candidate to the radical group.

“Sure. Yeah, absolutely,” El-Sayed replied to Tommy’s question – before going on a nearly five-minute screed against the line of questioning.

“Why are you asking the question?” El-Sayed asked Tommy.

“Well, because they’re a terrorist group,” Tommy responded.

“But what are you implying?” El-Sayed pressed. “Do you assume that I wouldn’t?”

Tommy said, “Yes…because I have not heard you disavow them yet.”

“You’re asking the question because implicitly you assume that I’ll have dual loyalties, right?” El-Sayed replied. “You assume, Tommy, that because I am Muslim, that somehow I would have some allegiance to something that is not our Constitution.”

El-Sayed compared his situation to John F. Kennedy, the first Catholic president of the United States.

“When he ran for president, he was asked whether or not he was going to have allegiance to the Pope at the Vatican because, of course, he’s Catholic, and his answer, famously, was that he was not running to be a Catholic president,” El-Sayed continued. “He was running to be president and happened to be Catholic.”

“I’m not running to be a Muslim senator. I’m running for the US Senate and happen to be Muslim.”

Social media users continued to bash Crawford online after her apology, with some accusing her of racism and Islamophobia, and others for making opinionated posts despite a network policy that reporters remain neutral when covering political candidates.

Prior to joining CBS News in 2009, Crawford worked at ABC News, PBS and the Chicago Tribune.

El-Sayed has been running a campaign based on “Medicare for all,” abolishing ICE, ending US aid to Israel and imposing new millionaire and billionaire taxes in the closely-watched Michigan Senate race.
