Jenna Dewan addresses ‘DWTS’ partner Val Chmerkovskiy’s suspension over Carrie Ann Inaba controversy

Jenna Dewan emphasized that “the show must go on” following her “Dancing With the Stars” partner Val Chmerkovskiy’s absence from Tuesday’s “Dedication Night” episode amid his one-week suspension.

Speaking to “Good Morning America” Tuesday night, Dewan revealed she and pro Alan Bersten, who filled in for Chmerkovskiy, had just two and a half days to rehearse.

“I learned this early on — in life, but also especially in our business — that the show must go on,” Dewan, 45, told the outlet. “Sometimes, unexpected things happen and you have to pivot. And then your job is to make the best of that, and your mental game is what you’re in control of.”

She joked that Bersten, 32, “stepped up,” in a nod to her 2006 film of the same name, before the pro quipped, “I had to step up.”

“You rose to the occasion, truly, and you were so amazing,” Dewan added. “Your heart was present the entire time. Listen, we made it happen, and we enjoyed ourselves. It was beautiful.”

Bersten, for his part, explained that he and Chmerkovskiy, 40, had “a lot of back and forth” about the latter’s choreography.

“Obviously, Jenna is Val’s partner, so we were in communication. He was like, ‘Change whatever you want. Do whatever you want. Just enjoy,’” he told “GMA.”

Dewan performed a Viennese waltz to the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody” in honor of her mother, Nancy Lee Bursch, earning her first 10 of the season and a score of 37 out of 40.

The performance also drew praise from the judges, with Derek Hough calling Dewan a “class act,” while Carrie Ann Inaba described it as the “ultimate breakthrough.”

Chmerkovskiy was handed a one-week suspension last week after referencing Will Smith’s infamous Oscars slap following Inaba’s harsh critique of his wife, Jenna Johnson.

“You almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom last night,” his since-deleted TikTok post read.

The remark sparked controversy among “DWTS” fans, prompting Chmerkovskiy to publicly apologize before BBC Studios, the show’s producer, announced his suspension.

A source close to the production previously told Page Six that the suspension “took Val by surprise, but he took it gracefully and he understood.”

Chmerkovskiy watched Tuesday night’s episode from home, according to the source, and later commented on one of Bersten’s Instagram posts, thanking him for “stepping in and doing such an amazing job.”
