Gleb Savchenko insists he didn’t ‘attack’ fellow ‘DWTS’ pro Alan Bersten after shady comments
Gleb Savchenko insisted he “didn’t attack” Alan Bersten when he shaded his fellow “Dancing with the Stars” pro for briefly replacing Val Chmerkovskiy.
“Alan’s a good dancer for his niche,” Savchenko, 43, said during a recent TikTok live. “He’s great for his thing. But he can’t be compared to Val.”
The Russian dancer told fans that he’s “not talking trash” about Bersten, 32, but rather is “just saying how it is.”
“Different styles, different technique, different s–t… I don’t wanna compare anybody,” Savchenko continued. “I think everybody’s great for their own thing. And it takes time to get better and better.”
Savchenko then appeared to shade Bersten, again, by adding, “And it takes time to get better and better.”
Over the weekend, news broke that Bersten was stepping in for Chmerkovskiy, 40, for the show’s “Dedication Night,” after Chmerkovskiy received a one-week suspension for a controversial social media post about judge Carrie Ann Inaba.
Savchenko — who was not asked back as a pro for the current season — chimed in on the replacement choice on TikTok, claiming Bersten is “not up to the level of dancing, like, period.”
“He’s a good dancer, I guess, for TV, but if we talk about art? Like, creating art? He’s like, eh,” Savchenko went on. “I don’t want to like, talk s–t about people, I’m just being honest.”
Savchenko even suggested a dancer from the show’s troupe should have been chosen instead to dance with Chmerkovskiy’s celebrity partner, “Step Up” actress Jenna Dewan.
“I don’t have anything against the guy, just, like, why Alan?” Savchenko questioned.
Savchenko later told Page Six that his comments were coming from a a professional dancer’s perspective, and were “nothing personal against Alan at all.”
“I’ve known Alan for years, I have a lot of love for him, and I respect what he brings to the show,” he told us, adding, “I was simply sharing my opinion on how different the partnership will look with Alan stepping in for Val.”
During Tuesday’s episode, Bersten and Dewan, 45, scored a 37/40 for their Viennese waltz to “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers, which was dedicated to Dewan’s mother, Nancy Lee Bursch.
Inaba, who gave the pair a “10” for their dance, told the “Rookie” actress she gave her “ultimate breakthrough” performance.
“Your heart was open. You felt free. You felt light,” Inaba, 58, added.
Chmerkovskiy was punished for referencing Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars for talking about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, after Inaba criticized Chmerkovskiy’s wife and fellow pro Jenna Johnson’s dance last week.
Inaba responded to Chmerkovskiy’s comments via her Instagram Stories, writing, “So this is what we are doing now?”
Chmerkovskiy apologized to Inaba, but he was suspended by BBC Studios and watched the episode at home.
Page Six confirmed Wednesday that Chmerkovskiy’s suspension was officially lifted as he returned to rehearsals with Dewan.
