Spanish TV reporter warns of rough seas — right as monster wave knocks him down during live broadcast
His segment’s dead in the water!
A Spanish news reporter was warning residents about rough seas in a live broadcast Thursday when a giant sneaker wave suddenly knocked him over — leaving his anchor with a hilariously gobsmacked facial expression, footage shows.
Sergio Ovejero, of the local station ETB2, was reporting on the dangers of getting too close to sea walls in the beachside town of Ondarroa when the wave took the wind out of his sails, according to the British station Channel 5 News.
“All eyes are now on the sea as the predictions tell us it’s gonna get worse as hours go by,” Ovejero said in Spanish, according to a translation, while standing on a path next to a sea wall.
“[There’s a] warning about the pavement and being near sea walls like this one we are at the moment, since there is a risk — ” he said, as a massive wave surges over the wall and cuts him off.
The wave engulfed him and a camerawomen and cut the feed, filling the screen with an image of nothing but wild gray water.
When the footage cuts to the stunned anchor, Odei Esnaola, his jaw is hanging open in a GIF-worthy expression of stunned disbelief.
After a moment, he says, “Let’s hope our coworkers Sergio and Raquel are okay, we will update their situation in a second, let’s see on the map what Ovejero was telling us about.”
The network later confirmed the reporter and cameraman escaped without any serious injuries, according to Channel 5.
“Man, it sucks for him but what a f–king perfectly timed wave lmao,” one observer wrote on Reddit. “Warning about the risk just to be proven right immediately.”
