LAFC fan caught yelling racist slur at South Korea’s Son Heung-min after MLS game
LAFC’s MLS rivalry game against the LA Galaxy on Sunday was not a good scene for the team’s fan base.
A video of an LAFC fan spitting on a woman LA Galaxy fan during the 2-2 draw is already sparking a lot of backlash.
And that might not be the worst thing an LAFC fan did on Sunday.
A clip of a fan decked out in LAFC gear yelling a racist slur LAFC winger and South Korean national player Son Heung-min as he walked off the field is getting attention on social media.
The “fan” was yelling “nihao” repeatedly at Son Heung-min. This word is the Mandarin Chinese word for “hello”, and the fan yelling it at a South Korean player was an insensitive and racist microaggression.
It also clearly caught the South Korean star’s attention, as the video showed him glaring at the fan who was yelling at him.
Once the clip surfaced on social media, fans began asking for this season ticket holder (who many identified, because of how often he attends games) to have his access get revoked.
The same X account that posted the video of the racist slur also posted a photo of the fan who said it with their face blurred out.
The post was captioned, “@LAFC this man straight up yelled nihao nihao at Sonny when he circled the field to thank the fans after the game. I spoke with security and since he left Section 111 by then, they said there was little they could do. Since when was racism accepted in @MLS.”
It will be interesting to see whether LAFC addresses this situation or issues a statement on what happened.
