Obama and other Ilhan Omar defenders are looking like fools

Former President Barack Obama huffed this week that an investigation into Ilhan Omar for immigration fraud was a sham.

“The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president,” he ranted.

“The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans.”

Yes, it’s awful that Ilhan Omar was being investigated by — checks the record — the Obama administration.

Way back in 2016, the feds had evidence that Omar entered into a sham marriage with a man thought to be her brother.

The case reportedly stalled only because prosecutors feared the statute of limitations had run out — or because the Democrats just lost the nerve to investigate their own.

So, Barack: Were your underlings bringing down “the full weight of government” on this “law-abiding elected official” back then? Trying to “intimidate” Omar because of her politics?

Public reports now suggest a core allegation, that Omar married her brother to help him get a green card, is certainly true, as they include:

  • The couple’s marriage certificate — signed by a Christian pastor, not an imam as an observant Muslim truly getting hitched would want.
  • Tax filings she jointly filed with a former husband, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, instead of Elmi.
  • A friend of her first husband who described Elmi as an “extremely feminine Somali guy” and says he was told the guy was Omar’s “brother.”
  • A Minneapolis community leader who also says Omar introduced Elmi as her brother.
  • The fact that Omar, asked recently if she married her brother, would only say, “not to my knowledge.”

The situation is so embarrassing that a number of Democrats aren’t interested in defending her.

Another part of the feds’ probe reportedly involves the year of her birth: Some records list it as 1981, others 1982; if it’s the former, then she was 18, not 17, when her dad became a citizen in 2000 — and so too old to automatically gain her own citizenship through him.

As many as 40 Democrats refused to sign a letter to the Justice Department and Homeland Security from 175 others slamming the probe as “a weaponization of law enforcement” meant to “harass a sitting Member of Congress 22 days before an election.”

Harassment? Or justice?

It’s certainly possible the congresswoman will beat the rap; some of the reported facts may be too hard to prove in a criminal case.

But the evidence already public is more than sufficient to justify continuing to look — and who knows what else investigators have uncovered?

The only real question, at this point, is why any Democrats still claim the probe is “political” — unless they’re the ones playing politics.
