Zoo welcomes capybara triplets after ‘steamy’ love triangle drama: ‘Something from a soap opera’

A Scottish Zoo welcomed a brood of baby capybara triplets — revealing a love triangle worthy of a soap opera in the habitat.

Keepers at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo discovered the three baby capybaras on Wednesday, after they were born overnight to parents Luna and Rodney.

The adorable youngsters are “doing well” and will have their first health check-up in the coming weeks, where keepers will learn their genders and choose their names, the zoo wrote in a news release.

“The triplets are adorable, exploring their new home while staying close to mum and taking in the world around them. It is wonderful to watch,” Darren McGarry, head of animal care at Edinburgh Zoo, said in a statement.

The joyous news, however, revealed a shocking scandal in the capybara habitat.

In a now-viral Facebook post announcing the pregnancy, the zoo revealed that a recent picture of two capybaras sharing a steamy moment in the pool did not show Rodney and Luna — but rather Rodney and Luna’s sister, Cali.

“But there’s a plot twist… that steamy pool moment was Rodney and Cali, but it’s actually Luna who’s pregnant! Looks like Rodney’s been keeping busy with both sisters…” Edinburgh Zoo wrote.

The triplets follow the birth of Bru in May, the first capybara to be born in Scotland in 18 years.

“Capys might look cute and innocent but honestly, their lives are like something from a soap opera. Cali rules the roost and Luna does as she is told,” McGarry said.

“Bru is the golden child. Rodney is a bit of a shy boy – but he is clearly a hit with the ladies! Like they say, it is always the quiet ones.”
