Hilary Duff reveals moment she knew she was ‘f—king done’ with Lizze McGuire: ‘I was exhausted’
This is what dreams are made of — or are they?
Hilary Duff revealed she was “f–king done” with playing her beloved Lizzie McGuire character after filming “The Lizzie McGuire Movie” in 2003, adding that she was “exhausted” by all the fanfare.
“I was pretty done with Lizzie at that time. I had filmed 30 episodes one year and 35 episodes the next. I turned into a huge star. Everyone called me Lizzie,” the actress told Paper Magazine in a recent interview.
“And then I went to Italy to film that movie, and I think I was just like, ‘I’m f–king done with you.’
“I want people to see me. This isn’t fun anymore. So now when I sing it, it feels so much better, and I get to join the celebration of what it meant to people, and what it means to me now,” she continued.
Duff, 39, explained she didn’t want to sound “ungrateful” for the opportunity, but at the time, she was “pretty exhausted by it.”
“I was trying to create Hilary Duff separate from Lizzie, so that was right at the midway point where I was like, ‘I’m never singing that song.’ And I didn’t even own it. It wasn’t my song to sing. But now I feel like it is,” she explained.
The hit movie, which served as the finale to Disney’s “Lizzie McGuire” series, followed the teen on her middle school graduation trip to Rome, Italy.
While there, she is mistaken for Italian pop star Isabella Parigi and gets convinced by her music partner, Paolo Valisari, to take her place at a popular music awards show.
The TV series, which ran from 2001 to 2004, was one of the most popular on the Disney Channel at the time, averaging around 2.3 million viewers per episode, according to VICE.
In addition to Duff, the show also starred actress Lalaine as her best friend, Miranda Sanchez, and Adam Lamberg as David “Gordo” Gordon, their nerdy male sidekick.
In 2019, Disney+ announced it was working on a reboot of the show, which saw Lizzie as a 30-year-old living in New York City.
In the reboot, her character was engaged to a chef and working as an apprentice for an interior designer.
However, the reboot was canceled in 2020 due to disagreements over the show’s direction.
In a 2022 interview with The Cut, Duff admitted she still hoped the reboot could come to life someday.
“I think there’s always a possibility there. And even if she’s 40, I don’t think people care. It’s always going to be somewhat interesting to people to see where she ended up,” she said.
