The Met Gala 2027 has a new theme after canning its John Galliano retrospective.

The Anna Wintour-helmed event will instead celebrate the banal, with the new theme, “extraOrdinary: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.”

According to the New York Times, the theme will reimagine blue jeans, white T-shirts and other ordinary items through the lens of high fashion.

One month after announcing that Galliano would be the subject of the 2027 event, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British fashion designer parted ways after intense criticism over his antisemitic and racist comments from 2011.

Backlash was swift, with public officials as well as museum donors pushing for the cancellation.

“I do not want the debate surrounding me to place the Met in a difficult position or to distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute,” Galliano wrote in a statement published on Instagram. “I also recognise and respect that an exhibition honouring my work would be painful for some.”

Wintour — who has long been a fan and friend of Galliano’s — applauded his “courageous” choice in a statement, calling it “the right decision.”

Sources told Page Six exclusively that significant work had already gone into the Galliano “Horizons” exhibition and themes are typically solidified one year in advance.
