Gavin Newsom ‘peaked too early’ ahead of 2028 run as backers tire of pol: ‘Titanic steamer trunks of baggage’
With the midterms over, a cavalcade of potential presidential candidates is imminently headed to LA and NYC for fundraisers to woo high-powered donors, we hear.
Gov. Gavin Newsom led several polls of the hypothetical Democratic field a year ago, running ahead of former Veep Kamala Harris at times. But his position has slipped in recent months, and insiders say donors may have tired of the candidate.
“We are about to be invaded, and it’s a wide-open field,” said one NYC-based Democratic insider. “We should probably lock the doors and grab hold of our wallets, and avoid the Regency and the Carlyle!”
“It’s crazy and a lot more intense,” said the source, who added that the field will include Newsom, Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.
As far as Newsom, “He seems to have peaked too early,” the source said, adding that people are talking more about the news that the Dept. of Justice is investigating him as well as his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, than his campaign.
(Newsom has said that the Trump administration is coming after him because he’s mulling a presidential run, “Not because they found a crime, because they’re simply trying to find one.”)
“All of a sudden, Gavin Newsom with all his drama doesn’t seem as appealing as a Beshear or Osoff,” said the insider.
“Newsom is basically done,” among East Coast Dems, a source said. “The media loves him because he’s good copy. But I am amazed how the donor orbit is over him. His moment is in the past. There’s baggage and then there’s Titanic steamer trunks of baggage. Let’s not forget he was married to Kimberly Guilfoyle, and the state of California is such a mess.”
The insider said that New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is also prepping a presidential run, even though she has not ruled out a potential primary challenge for U.S. Senate leader Chuck Schumer‘s seat in 2028. AOC gave $1 million to progressive Michigan Senate winner Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. “When you write a check for $1 million, the assumption is she’s running for president. [Michigan] is one of the first primaries, and giving a million means she has a national agenda.”
We also hear that Barack Obama’s ex-Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, is eyeing a return to a Democratic White House as a Secretary of State option.
But the theme uniting Democrats, supposedly, is that, “The goal is to win. No one is looking for a moral victory.”
