Lakers’ Austin Reaves turns over new leaf in road victory
SACRAMENTO — Austin Reaves accomplished a feat for just the second time this season during the Lakers’ 116-103 win over the Kings on Wednesday.
And he wasn’t afraid to let a reporter know about it after his team’s third straight win to improve to 7-2.
The Lakers star guard recorded 21 points, four assists and three rebounds in the victory over his team’s in-state foe.
But the biggest stat that stood out: zero turnovers — something Reaves had done in just one other game so far.
“You got something to say? You can take credit for it,” Reaves quipped postgame to a reporter who brought up Reaves’ struggles with turnovers pregame. “Go ahead. Talking crazy before the game.”
A friendly, lighthearted back-and-forth broke out between Reaves and the reporter, who asked again how many turnovers the 6-foot-5 guard had.
“Zero,” Reaves responded.
How about the last game?
“A lot,” Reaves said.
It was five, to be exact, with Reaves struggling to take care of the ball during the Lakers’ win over the Heat on Monday.
The only other game Reaves played this season without a turnover was the Oct. 27 loss to the Trail Blazers.
Ball security has been an issue for him throughout the season.
His 4.1 turnovers per game are not only a career high but also tied for the NBA’s third-highest figure.
He averaged six turnovers in the Lakers’ previous four games before Wednesday.
“I’ve had a lot all year,” he said. “We’re gonna fix those. For you.”
Was Wednesday the start of Reaves fixing his ball security woes?
“Yeah,” Reaves said, “I had zero.”
Friday’s home game against the Trail Blazers will provide insight into whether that’ll be true.
