Joe Cool, other new balloons take flight at Balloonfest ahead of the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Forget the turkey — there’s a new dog in town this Thanksgiving.

Seven new character balloons that will debut in the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took flight Saturday in a test run in New Jersey — including Snoopy’s suave alter ego Joe Cool, who will bring his swagger to Gotham alongside his pal Woodstock.

Joe Cool showed up to Balloonfest above MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, as part of the pack of new additions — which will join the over 100 inflatables in the iconic parade to mark its momentous centennial year delighting America on Thanksgiving morning.

The cool canine is sporting black sunglasses, around 40 times as large as an actual pair of shades, and a red sweater in the gigantic ensemble — that will fly at 41.6 feet tall, 57 feet long, and 24.3 feet wide.

“Every year, we’ve got the great challenge and task, a beautiful opportunity to introduce brand new characters into the parade. And the most important part of that process is ensuring that, at a moment’s notice, once that balloon takes flight, it’s immediately recognizable,” said Will Coss, executive producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

“It has that impact, it’s the heartwarming, familiar character, and whether it’s someone you grew up with, or someone you love today, we want to make sure that each and every character has that special impact on our audience.

The beloved Bluey, the Blue Heeler dog from the BBC animated preschool TV series, was also added this year, towering at 47.2 feet tall, 47 feet long and 27.8 feet wide.

Taken from the “Bluey” episode “Christmas Swim,” he is donning a gold crown, inspired by the tradition of Christmas crackers, and according to the show’s website, the balloon is 31 times taller than a real Blue Heeler.

Buckaroo Bob the Minion, from the “Despicable Me” franchise by Illumination, also makes his grand entrance this year — as a cowboy donning a red bandana and denim and riding a giant banana bronco.

The massive minion will stand at 39.2 feet tall, 46,4 feet long and 24.8 feet wide, nearly four stories tall, at the Manhattan parade, which begins at West 77th Street and Central Park West and ends at Macy’s Herald Square on West 34th Street.

Hello Kitty Big Apple will also join the new holiday crew.

The signature Sanrio cat — approximately 33.6 feet tall, 28.4 feet wide and 33.5 feet long — will be holding a red apple in homage to NYC.

Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey will also bring his magic this Turkey Day — wearing his signature blue wizard hat with white stars and a crescent moon and red robe from Disney’s “Fantasia.”

“This new balloon will be the 21st appearance of [a] Mickey Mouse balloon in the annual Thanksgiving Day parade. Mickey’s first appearance was in 1934, with a balloon designed with the help of Walt Disney,” explained the Disney Cruise Line Blog.

The bear Billie Brightpaw, an original Macy’s character, will also be added to the group this year, donning a red hat and scarf, and flying in at 29.5 feet tall, 32.7 feet long, and 20.85 feet wide.

The seventh new balloon is the canine superhero Underdog, who will make his first appearance in the parade since 1984, after flying in it every year from 1965 to 1984. The mammoth mutts clocks in at 28.8 feet tall, 41.5 feet long, and 20.7 feet wide.

Character balloons were first unveiled at the iconic 2.5-mile parade in 1927, three years after it was founded.

Coss also detailed the amount of labor it takes to manage the gigantic balloons — which includes a flight management team, vehicle team, and balloon handlers.

“The number of balloon handlers varies depending on the size of the balloon and how the balloon needs to travel through the city. But there’s up to 100 people that are balloon handling on any one given balloon,” he explained.

The balloons join the festive array of floats this year, which range from Pasta Knight and his trusty Rigatoni Pony, sponsored by Rao’s, to Lindt’s Master Chocolatier Ballroom, to one called Dashing all the Way by Doordash.

This year’s festivities will include two college marching bands — from the University of Connecticut and the University of Alabama.

The parade, which is celebrating its centennial, will be broadcast live on NBC and is available to stream live on Peacock.

“It’s the 100th time that people are watching this parade. I mean, that’s a big deal. In 1924, a group of Macy’s colleagues came together to deliver a new tradition to celebrate the holiday season,” said Coss.

“Over 100 parades later, that’s a different but similar group of Macy’s colleagues, who are still coming together to bring this great tradition to life.”
