Melbourne’s brief spell of warm winter weather has come to an abrupt end, with meteorologist Jane Bunn warning the coldest conditions in weeks are about to hit.

After days of temperatures reaching 19C to 20C and overnight lows hovering around 15C, including yesterday’s record-breaking 16C, the city is now returning to more typical winter conditions.

Temperatures are expected to drop to between 11C and 15C on Friday, still slightly above the June average of 7C to 14C, but significantly cooler than recent days.

The main impact of a week-long weather system is set to hit on Saturday, with winds shifting from northerly to southwesterly, bringing much colder air across the region.

Saturday is the wettest day of this two-week period. There’s even some wintry hail forecast.

The northerly winds that have been present since Monday will be replaced by the southwesterly change, marking a significant shift in conditions for Melburnians who have enjoyed the unseasonably mild weather.

Weekend forecasts around Australia:

Both Brisbane and Canberra can expect a brief shower over the cities. Brisbane will remain warm with a forecast of 24C on Saturday, while Canberra remains cooler at 11C.

Sydney continues to have plenty of Sunshine expecting a top of 20C, with no rain on the forecast for the weekend.

Wet and cold weather is expected to continue in Adelaide reaching a max of 14C on Saturday.

Perth is expected to reach a top of  17C and remain partly cloudy throughout the weekend.
