Trump honors Elon Musk, Jensen Haung and other top tech CEOs with prestigious science award

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Thursday honored his friends and tech bros with the National Medal of Science to celebrate a new “golden age” for American technology — and even came away with a medal himself.

In a ceremony at the Institute for Peace, Trump bestowed the highest US honor for leaders in science and engineering to SpaceX’s Elon Musk, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Dell CEO Michael Dell, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su.

Trump praised the “exciting advance of science and technology in the golden age of America. This is the golden age.”

He honored the CEOs as “people whose contributions to their fields will be remembered in the annals of science forever and ever and ever.”

During the ceremony, Trump also played a video tribute to his uncle, Dr. John Trump, a prominent electrical engineer, physicist, and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In World War II, Dr. Trump researched microwave radar for the Allies and headed the British Branch of the MIT Radiation Lab, which helped enable the use of radar to plan the D-Day invasion. Later in his career, he pioneered new cancer treatments.

And, when inventor Nikola Tesla died in 1943, the FBI asked Dr. Trump to examine Tesla’s papers and equipment to evaluate whether they contained any dangerous or secret ray technologies.

President Ronald Reagan awarded Dr. Trump the National Medal of Science in 1983. Dr. Trump, the younger brother of the president’s father Fred, died two years later.

President Trump said he remembered his uncle getting the award, calling it a “a great honor.”

“He was greatly honored by that. I remember it very well. It was considered to be just the honor of his lifetime.”

Trump has been cozying up to the tech industry as his sons embrace cryptocurrency and his administration grapples with rapidly developing technology around AI. He convened the industry’s top CEOs at the White House last week to sign a “morally binding” agreement on the use of “super intelligence.”

The honorees are all regulars at the White House attending tech summits, state dinners and meetings in the Oval Office.

None of the CEOs spoke at Thursday’s ceremony, but simply accepted the gold medals from the president, who presented the prize in a jewelry box.

Trump was elusive in his praise for the group, with a combined net worth of $1.736 trillion.

“I want to congratulate our winners because you’re all very well known, every one of you. But it’s about time you were recognized, and you are truly recognized,” he said.

“You are great, great people. You’re going to go down in the annals of history as being great.”

Trump gave his most profound praise to Musk, the richest person in the world. The two men have repaired their relationship since last year’s blowup, much of which played out in real time on Musk’s X platform as they rage-tweeted at each other.

Still, it appears to be all water under the bridge now, as Trump called Musk “my friend” and described him as a “national treasure.”

“Quite honestly, there is nobody like him,” Trump said fondly. “We’re proud of you. Very proud of you.”

“Elon is our modern-day Thomas Edison,” he added, “and Elon, I want to congratulate you, my friend, and all of that. But you are a very, very special guy. Thank you very much.”

The president had warm words for Dell and his wife Susan, calling the couple, who have contributed $250 million to his Trump Savings accounts, “unbelievable philanthropists.”
