Hollywood Unlocked founder Jason Lee ousted as Stockton vice mayor after bitter leadership clashes
Hollywood blogger-turned-politician Jason Lee has been booted from his role as vice mayor of Stockton, California, following months of bitter infighting, explosive accusations and political power struggles at City Hall.
The founder of celebrity gossip site Hollywood Unlocked — an outlet with more than four million Instagram followers — was stripped of his vice mayor title Tuesday after the Stockton City Council voted 4-2 to remove him from the leadership position, according to CBS.
Lee, who boasts 1.3 million Instagram followers of his own, was also ousted from the city’s powerful Audit Committee in a separate 6-1 vote, dealing another blow to his political influence. Lee was the single “no” vote.
But the outspoken media personality appeared eager to put his City Hall drama in the rearview mirror.
“I resigned as Vice Mayor of Stockton tonight. I’m flying to Harvard to do a guest lecture alongside @nathalierayes. We’ll have a lot to talk about tomorrow!” Lee wrote on Instagram Tuesday.
Lee, however, did not resign. The announcement came after a chaotic council meeting in which Lee offered to step down before his colleagues could formally remove him, a motion to accept his resignation failed 4-3, paving the way for Mayor Christina Fugazi to introduce a motion to oust him instead.
Lee, who said he needed to catch a flight, left before the vote that ultimately stripped him of his title.
The political showdown marked the latest chapter in an increasingly ugly feud between Lee, Fugazi and other city officials over financial oversight, government transparency and allegations of misconduct.
Fugazi, who originally nominated Lee as vice mayor in 2025, insisted the shake-up was strictly city business rather than political payback, per KCRA3.
“This CPRA, it’s not something I knew about,” Fugazi said, referring to records obtained through a California Public Records Act request.
“I wasn’t aware before the records were produced, but they do show something that calls into question whether or not somebody should be in a position of authority in terms of financials.”
Lee, whose vice mayor term was originally set to expire Dec. 31, had challenged whether the council even had the legal authority to remove him, according to CBS.
“The Council unanimously ratified my appointment as Vice Mayor through December 31, 2026, as the City Charter provides,” Lee said in a statement ahead of the meeting.
“Before the Council acts, I’m asking the City Attorney to identify in writing the legal authority for these items. It’s a simple question, and residents deserve a clear answer.”
The bitter battle follows a string of controversies involving Lee, including clashes with law enforcement over records handling, heated confrontations with city officials and scrutiny surrounding city payments for a comedy show featuring the media personality.
Lee has also accused city leaders of attempting to silence him after he was prevented from participating in meetings remotely.
Councilmember Michelle Padilla blasted the leadership shake-up as a “charade,” while residents warned that stripping Lee of committee assignments could leave his District 6 constituents without representation on key panels.
The dysfunction has even caught the attention of a civil grand jury, which criticized the council’s infighting and treatment of city employees.
Despite the dramatic ouster, Lee will remain an elected Stockton City Council member representing District 6.
