LA sushi restaurant known for fancy pink boxes closes after 6-year run
Every rose has its thorn.
Venice Beach sushi staple Wabi on Rose has officially closed its doors after 6 years, the restaurant announced Tuesday.
“After many wonderful years of serving the community, we are permanently closing our doors,” the restaurant said in a social media post. “Heartbroken to say goodbye but grateful you were part of our Venice love story.”
The restaurant appears to have closed with little to no notice. A photo posted to Reddit on Tuesday shows a message on the door of the business explaining that it is already closed.
“It is with a heavy heart we have to announce our closure. To everyone who walked through our doors and brought us joy we thank you.” the note reads.
The restaurant’s phone number is not accepting calls.
Wabi was known just as much for their trendy pink takeout bags and boxes as they were for their crispy tuna rice and tiger rolls.
Fans of the eatery were stunned by the sudden closure.
“Absolutely GOBSMACKED. the westside loves you Wabi,” one commenter wrote.
“This is really a huge bummer. I used to love taking people here for good sushi on the west side. Such unique rolls and drinks unlike anywhere else,” another commenter said.
“When is the last day!?!? Like today?? Omg” a third commenter wrote.
The restaurant was originally located on Venice’s Abbott Kinney Boulevard, where it served the neighborhood for 19 years. In December 2018, the location burned down in a devastating fire.
In April 2020, the new Wabi opened on Rose Avenue with takeout and delivery options amid the pandemic. Its contemporary Japanese ciusine was helmed by executive chef Rain Pantana.
Wabi is just the latest closure in LA’s restaurant bloodbath, which has claimed countless eateries both new and old in recent months.
Italian restaurant Cinque Terre West, also on Rose Ave. closed back in June and moved to Texas. The restaurant only operated in that location for a year, after its previously location burned down in the 2025 Palisades fire.
VooDoo Doughnut, a Portland-based doughnut chain known for its bold flavors, suddenly closed its Venice Beach location in June after just one year in business.
