LA’s ‘best bar’ nightlife staple set to turn out the lights permanently after 11 years

It’s the last call for an acclaimed Los Angeles bar.

Just as Everson Royce Bar in Downtown LA marks its eleventh anniversary, the business is preparing to join the long list of restaurant and nightlife closures across the Los Angeles this year, as rising operating costs crush struggling local business owners.

The bar called the City of Angels a “disturbingly difficult” place to do business in a social media post — but did not specify any one specific reason for the shuttering.

“On December 20th, ERB will be ending its magical run,” the bar stated on Instagram.

“To our staff, please know that everything you’ve done while here at ERB is so much more than what anyone else would have done,” the sad announcement continued.

“The way that ERB is loved by you will never be forgotten. Caring for anything in deep meaningful ways is becoming a lost art and the way you cared for and about ERB has been an absolute masterpiece.”

ERB first opened in in 2015 at 1936 E. 7th St. in Downtown LA’s Arts District, just next door to its sister business Silverlake Wine. The bar has frequently appeared on Time Out’s list of best bars; editors noted the business for its tasty, reasonably prices cocktails and delicious single burger.

Fans were devastated by the sudden closure.

“Damn. Awful news. Truly one of the best bars and bar food offerings around. This sucks!” one fan wrote.

“So frustrating to not see the city officials stepping in on these countless closures. LA is unfortunately not a business friendly city,” another commenter wrote.

“Dagger to the heart. One of my favorite places in LA,” said a third commenter.

The announcement comes as ERB co-owners Randy Clement and April Langford also close another business, West Altadena Wine and Spirits in Altadena. The wine shop’s last day of operation was Sunday, October 25.

Everson is just the latest business is close amid LA’s ongoing restaurant bloodbath, which has seen a wave of bars and restaurants shutter in recent months, including Downtown LA’s Rossoblu, which will close on November 1, and Sora Craft Kitchen, which closed this month.

ERB says they hope to see as many of their patrons as possible before their December 20 closure, and that more details on the closure will be shared soon.
