Harrison Butker’s latest brutal field goal miss opened door for Chiefs loss with Justin Tucker in waiting
The Chiefs have a kicking problem, and the pressure seems to be heating up on Harrison Butker after missing yet another important field goal.
Butker watched as a crucial field goal late in the fourth quarter sailed wide right from 54 yards out and set up the Broncos for the go-ahead touchdown en route to a 28-24 loss on Sunday, as the pressure is on with Justin Tucker waiting in the wings.
Butker, who made waves two years ago with a controversial graduation speech at Benedictine College, went 1-for-2 on field goal opportunities and looked dejected after he walked off the field and down toward the Chiefs locker room after the game.
The Chiefs field goal kicker called the botched attempt a “really bad miss” when speaking with reporters.
“Just completely missed the ball, didn’t even give it a chance,” he said. “It didn’t feel good off the foot. Just not good.”
It highlights the way this season has gone for Butker, whose six missed field goals this year are the most in the NFL and the 68.8 field goal rate that he entered Sunday’s game with is the lowest of his career.
Butker missed two against the Seahawks last weekend, which led the Chiefs to go out and add the former Baltimore kicker to their practice squad. Tucker was released by the Ravens in May 2025 following accusations of sexual misconduct by 16 Baltimore-area massage therapists.
Tucker has denied the allegations.
Butker said he’d had one of his best weeks of practice going into Sunday’s game and lauded Tucker’s presence around the Chiefs.
“Justin’s been great,” he said. “Enjoyed talking with him and getting to know him a little bit more. It was a good week of practice, but it doesn’t matter, you have to make them in the game.”

Tucker’s presence raised questions about whether Chiefs head coach Andy Reid would move to make the ex-Raven the Chiefs’ new kicker.
Those questions will only grow louder following the loss to Denver.
Even without the missed field goal, the Chiefs also found themselves on the wrong side of a false start call with seconds remaining and Kansas City trailing 28-24.
Patrick Mahomes hiked the ball and completed a pass to Rashee Rice, but the refs were blowing the play dead because of the flags, wiping away what would have been the game-winning touchdown.
The Chiefs will play the Jets next Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
