Garrett Wilson’s reintroduction to Jets offense didn’t end as anyone hoped

The Jets finally targeted their top receiver Garrett Wilson the way they need to target their best offensive player Sunday against the Raiders.

Wilson, who was targeted only three times last week, had 12 passes thrown his way, resulting in six receptions for 83 yards. But in the end, the result was the same: another Jets loss.

Wilson caught a 31-yard pass from Geno Smith on the first play from scrimmage.

“We just came out with an aggressive mindset, and that worked for us,’’ Wilson said. “Geno was dialed in, and Coach [Frank] Reich [the offensive coordinator] gave us the game plan all week. We knew what to expect, and we executed for the most part. That’s what our offense should look like.’’

The Jets, as expected, were without rookie David Bailey, their top draft pick and top pass rusher, for the loss to against the Raiders.

Bailey, who played the first seven games this season but didn’t practice all week with a strained groin injury he suffered in last week’s loss to the Dolphins, has been having an exemplary rookie season.

He leads the team with 5 ½ sacks, nine quarterback hits and seven tackles for loss. He also has three forced fumbles and 35 tackles.

Although RB Breece Hall was held out for a fifth consecutive game because of the quadriceps injury he suffered in Week 3 against the Lions, expect him back next week.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said after the game that Hall is “close.’’ And Braelon Allen, who rushed for 147 yards and a TD, hurt a leg late in the game and was walking gingerly in the locker room afterward. So, that will be something to keep an eye on as the week progresses.

“Breece is close,’’ Glenn said. “But we want to make sure we’re handling that situation the right way. He’s an important part of what we’re doing and what we’re building, so we want to make sure he’s fully healthy before putting him out there. What we don’t want is a setback.

“Same with Bailey. We don’t want a setback. He’s another guy who was very close to playing.’’

In the three games he played, Hall rushed for 163 yards on 53 carries for a 3.2-yard average and one TD. He’s been replaced admirably by Allen, who’s rushed for 565 yards and three TDs on 112 carries.

Rookie fourth-round draft pick Darrell Jackson Jr., who’s played well of late, started in place of T’Vondre Sweat and played an increased role with the defensive line thin.

The Jets, who have already been without David Onyemata (core muscle surgery and placed on IR in Week 3), this week elevated DT Payton Page and Quinton Bell from the practice squad to the regular roster for depth.

Jets kicker Jason Sanders was 4-for-4 on field goals Sunday and is now 17-for-19 this season. He did have one a first-half kickoff go out of bounds in the first half.

One injured starter who did return was LG Dylan Parham, who was out with a knee injury. Jets LT Olu Fashanu had two penalties, a holding that negated a 28-yard pass play to Wilson and a false start late in the game. Will McDonald IV had the Jets’ only sack. Jets WR Isaiah Williams caught an 18-yard TD pass and had a 41-yard kickoff return.

Other than Bailey and Hall, the Jets inactives Sunday included WR Tim Patrick, edge Joseph Ossai, CB Nahshon Wright and OLs Max Mitchell and Kohl Levao.
