Why Koala’s new Tamarama sofa is the brand’s best release yet

With a job as a professional shopping editor, you might think that it’s hard to invent something that genuinely stops me in my tracks and goes straight to the top of my must-have list.

But when something like that does come along, it’s my job to tell you about it — and urge as many of you to buy it as possible.

Step forward the new release from Aussie furniture brand, Koala — the Tamarama sofa.

The dreamy modular sofa manages to combine a classic, coastal and contemporary aesthetic in one pillowy soft sofa.

A high-end, modular lounge that can be built and extended for coastal-inspired, “cloud-like” comfort, the couch is genuinely one of the most comfortable things I’ve ever sat on.

Add to this the fact that it’s completely customisable.

Think six colours, two fabric types, and four configurations — there really is a Tamarama sofa for every living room.

When it comes to the specifics of what makes the Tamarama sofa so good, it has to have something to do with the Aussie founders’ experienece.

The brand’s designers, husband-and-wife team James Whitta and Alexandra Owen, used their experience from being the heads of Ikea’s product design team in Sweden to launch the sofa here.

James Whitta says the the Tamarama embodies the best of Aussie design right now.

“Nowhere does relaxed yet elevated living like Australia, and our goal with the Tamarama was to wholly embody that quality,” Whitta tells 7You.

“This is a range with softness, both visually and physically, but which still feels intentional and refined.

“There’s no question that the Australian design sensibility is evolving, and is uniquely desirable both here and around the world.

“This is a sofa not just for the beach house, but for stylish living worldwide, from city to coast.”

Offered the opportunity to try the Tamarama for myself at home, I jumped at the chance and opted for the four-seater configuration in Forest Green for my new open plan kitchen, living, dining room.

Despite my terror when 11 boxes showed up at the front door, the sofa was incredibly easy to build and install — taking a record 30 minutes of mine and my husband’s time to go from box to built.

It really was one of the easiest DIY projects I’ve ever done.

Now it’s up in our living room, we are all obsessed.

The ‘Luxe Comfort’ tier really adds a supremely comfortable sink-in feel to the couch, and this basically means that it’s “engineered to deliver the softest, most cloud-like seating experience possible”.

It also looks fantastic, deep, rich and elegant in the space — with the added bonus that all of the covers can come off and be washed when something (inevitably) gets spilt on them.

I think one of the most clever features of this sofa is the fact that it’s modular and so can be configured and re-configured over time.

Moving home and have a much bigger living space? No worries. You can build up the Tamarama so it’s much larger in yout space.

Suddenly craving that L-Shaped look? Add an ottoman and you’ve got what looks like a new couch.

You can also update and change and replace the covers over time.

Right now, the Tamarama is on sale as part of Koala’s EOFY offering, meaning it’s a fantastic opportunity to invest if you’ve been considering replacing your sofa at home.

Prices start at $525 for the Tamarama Ottoman. For more information and to shop from Koala, head here now.
