New Balance is bringing back a forgotten ’80s sneaker in time for the World Cup and sneakerheads are set to sell them out this week

The sportswear giant New Balance has teamed up with California streetwear label Basketcase to bring back the Gator Run, a little-known silhouette from the 1980s that is about to find a whole new audience among sneaker collectors, soccer fans and sneakerheads.

Landing in Australia on 19 June, the Basketcase x New Balance Gator Run arrives in two distinctive colourways, “Hacky” and “Maiden”, each drawing inspiration from the universal language of soccer and the communities that form around it.

Originally designed as an athletic turf shoe, the Gator Run has been pulled from the New Balance archives and reimagined as a low-profile lifestyle sneaker that feels perfectly aligned with fashion’s ongoing obsession with vintage sportswear.

The collaboration blends old-school sporting references with Basketcase’s signature DIY aesthetic, creating a shoe that looks as though it has already lived a few stories before landing in your wardrobe.

At the heart of the collection is the idea of “The Alternates”, a concept explored by Basketcase founder Zach Kinninger through memories of his childhood connection to soccer.

Rather than focusing on the game itself, Kinninger draws inspiration from the friendships, shared experiences and sense of belonging that often happen on the sidelines and beyond the pitch.

It is a theme that is particularly relevant in Los Angeles, a city known for its mix of cultures, styles and identities.

Through the collaboration, Basketcase and New Balance celebrate the balance between standing out and fitting in, using footwear as the canvas.

The “Hacky” colourway embraces a nostalgic sporting palette, pairing bright yellow mesh uppers with matching New Balance branding and rich green suede overlays.

Cream leather linings, coloured midsoles and gum rubber outsoles complete the look, giving the sneaker a vintage aesthetic that feels lifted straight from a forgotten football club photograph.

Meanwhile, the “Maiden” edition takes a cooler approach. Light blue mesh uppers are contrasted with maroon suede panelling, while crisp white leather linings and coloured midsoles sit atop black rubber outsoles.

The result is a colour combination that feels both retro and surprisingly contemporary.

Beyond the colour palettes, it is the details that help separate this collaboration from countless other sneaker launches.

Braided laces, custom pin embellishments and Basketcase’s Thumper logo on the tongue introduce a handcrafted feel that reflects the brand’s creative roots.

The shoes intentionally carry a lived-in energy, designed to feel personal rather than pristine.

Founded in 2018 in Costa Mesa, California, Basketcase has built a dedicated following through its distinctive take on American streetwear.

Known for graphic-heavy collections, vintage influences and playful cultural references, the label has grown from Kinninger’s college dorm room experiments into an internationally recognised brand.

In 2023, Basketcase expanded its footprint with the opening of HENCH, a studio space that now serves as the physical home of the label.

For Australian shoppers, the release offers an opportunity to secure a piece of sneaker history reinterpreted through a modern streetwear lens.

With football-inspired fashion continuing to dominate runways, social media feeds and street style photography, the return of the Gator Run feels perfectly timed.

The Basketcase x New Balance Gator Run will be available from 10am on 19 June via New Balance Australia, retailing for $220.
