Emmerdale viewers shocked as fan favourite is kidnapped but fans point out 'silly error'

Emmerdale fans were shocked when a village favourite was kidnapped at the end of Friday night’s episode of the long-running ITV soap but also pointed out one ‘silly’ error
Lewis Barton was kidnapped at the end of Friday night’s episode of Emmerdale. The cafe worker, who has been played by Bradley Riches since 2025, has had a dramatic time of it since he arrived in the Yorkshire village thanks to finding out his biological father was Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill) but has also struck up a relationship with Vinny Dingle.
On the latest episode of the long-running ITV soap, Vinny surprised Lewis with a trip to Madeira to mark their first trip as a couple, but Lewis did not seem too impressed that it had all come out of the blue. He later told Vinny he couldn’t go through with it but made him promise to go alone so he wouldn’t lose money.
Later on, Lewis’ brother Ross grilled him as to why he decided not to go. Lewis said: ” Vinny’s just text. His flight has been delayed. Didn’t need to rush off after all,” to which Ross replied: “So because of your autism, you don’t like unexpected change. So? I don’t mean anything by it.
“What I mean is, didn’t you say that you feel comfortable with Vinny? Safe?” to which Lewis said: “Yeah I do. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier.”
He urged him to pack his bags, get going and find Vinny at the airport, and, eventually, Lewis was talked into it.
But things took a dramatic turn as Lewis left the house with his suitcase and was promptly bunded into a van by men in balaclavas and was driven off.
Some fans immediately began to suspect that it was something to do with Kev, but others weren’t more shocked than anything else.
One fan wrote on Reddit: “Lewis being kidnapped I guess because of Kev, guess his return is imminent, but who actually knows that Lewis is his son except himself and Nicola?”
Another said: “I suspect Kev told some dodgy people for some reason. Kev is massively impulsive and doesn’t seem to be the brightest of criminals.” A third wrote: “Lewis getting kidnapped, seems a bit extreme No Refund holiday policy!” Taking to X, another fan simply said: “WTF! Who’d wanna kidnap Lewis?”
Others were just quick to question why there was no one else around in the usually-busy village in the middle afternoon, which allowed Lewis to be kidnapped in the first place. One fan said: “how convenient that nobody saw when Lewis was dragged into that van…. yup no one in sight.”
Another fan replied: “It’s always the same on soaps when someone needs people to be around they never are but when they don’t there’s always someone lurking and eavesdropping.” A third wrote: “All I wanna know come no one was around when Lewis was kidnapped? How convenient – bang in the middle of the village in broad daylight. Just looked so silly to me.”
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
