The Iranian national anthem was heavily booed by the crowd at Los Angeles Stadium before their 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Belgium

The Iranian national anthem was once again met with a chorus of boos from the crowd at Los Angeles Stadium ahead of their World Cup match against Belgium. For the second consecutive match, Iranian players stood with their hands over their hearts as certain football fans jeered their national anthem.

Notably, supporters in Los Angeles did the same on Monday during the nation’s opening tournament fixture against New Zealand. However, the contrast between Monday’s reaction and Sunday afternoon’s was plain to see, as the jeering before the Belgium match was considerably more intense than what had been witnessed earlier in the week.

When the Iranian national anthem rang out over the loudspeakers on Monday, the response began as a mixture of boos and cheers, with those in attendance seemingly uncertain which side to back, particularly given the circumstances surrounding the country at that time.

Yet by the time the anthem drew to a close, the blend of boos and cheers had shifted into predominantly shouts of encouragement, as Iranian supporters proudly celebrated their nation’s participation in the greatest sporting spectacle on earth.

That was far from the case on Sunday, as the crowd made their allegiances abundantly clear. As the Iranian national anthem rang out, the crowd at Los Angeles Stadium erupted into a chorus of boos and jeers, creating a deafening wall of noise that appeared to reflect sheer contempt and fury towards the Iranian side.

Significantly, Los Angeles is home to hundreds of thousands of Iranian exiles, a direct consequence of the Iranian Diaspora that followed the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The booing persisted throughout the entire anthem, though the players on the pitch appeared largely unfazed by the hostile reception ahead of their clash with Belgium.

The Shir o Khorshid, Iran’s pre-revolution flag, was also prominently displayed throughout the crowd. Prior to the tournament, FIFA declared that certain items considered “too political” would be prohibited from all stadiums.

The governing body ruled that the former Iranian flag fell into this category and was therefore banned from being brought into the stands for the duration of the competition.

Despite this, the Shir o Khorshid was clearly visible among the supporters, with a particularly sizeable one being brandished behind the goal where Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was set to take his position once the match got under way.

Previously, the Iranian National Team had threatened to halt play should they spot the flag being flown in the stands, or if chants or other remarks were directed at their players during any of their fixtures.

In the days building up to Iran’s clash with Belgium, protesters spoke to Mirror U.S. Sports and explained why it was so vital to bring the flag into the stadium as they strived to raise awareness of the situation unfolding in Iran.

“Oh, we will bring it no matter what,” said a protester named Niusha, who works in cyber security, on Monday. They added: “I know Iranians – we’re not going inside today – but I know a large group of Iranians that are going inside.

“They will bring the lion and sun flag inside the stadium because that is our Iran’s actual flag for thousands of years. And it always will be.”
