Iran were in World Cup action in the USA but away from the World Cup, President Donald Trump had issued a chilling threat on his social media channel

Iran continued their solid run at the World Cup amid escalating tensions that saw Donald Trump threaten to “blow the s—” out of the country.

On Sunday, Iran kept Belgium at bay and claimed a goalless draw at SoFi Stadium, as protests unfolded outside the Los Angeles venue. The Asian nation had already picked up a point following a thrilling stalemate with New Zealand earlier in the week, but the result leaves Iran well-placed to top Group G.

Should Iran beat Egypt, who drew with Belgium, and New Zealand fall short, they could clinch the group and reach the knockout stages for the very first time in World Cup history. Their impressive display comes just hours after Trump issued fresh warnings of potential bombings against the country.

Senator Markwayne Mullin alleged that an IRGC operative attempted to enter the US posing as a member of Iran’s World Cup delegation. Given the volatile geopolitical backdrop, Iran have faced an arduous and complex journey to the World Cup.

With the US and Israel locked in ongoing conflict with the nation, serious concerns emerged over the squad’s safety on American soil, with visas withheld from several staff members and their training base relocated to Mexico, despite all their fixtures being held in the United States.

The 80-year-old Trump stoked further anxiety on Sunday, telling FOX News that the United States could seize the Strait of Hormuz by force if necessary, reports the Mirror US. Trump said: “We may take over the Strait, if we have to. I’ll blow the s— out of them.”

Iran took to the pitch shortly after the U.S. president’s remarks, delivering a surprisingly gripping encounter despite it finishing goalless. Rudi Garcia’s Belgium face mounting pressure heading into their final fixture as the Red Devils continue to disappoint, though Iran impressed defensively.

Before kick-off, Iran’s national anthem was again met with loud jeers following demonstrations outside SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. During the match, Iran troubled Thibaut Courtois’ goal on several occasions, with Mehdi Taremi even finding the net following an impressive free-kick routine.

However, VAR chalked off the goal for offside and encroachment. Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand preserved the stalemate with a stunning stop to thwart Maxim De Cuyper after excellent build-up play from midfield maestro Kevin de Bruyne, while Romelu Lukaku was also left dejected.

The tide turned with 25 minutes left as Belgium defender Nathan Ngoy received his marching orders after playing a short back pass to Courtois. As Taremi pounced on the loose ball, the Iran forward was hauled down by Ngoy, prompting referee Dario Herrera to brandish his red card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Nevertheless, Belgium kept up the pressure, with Matias Fernandez-Pardo blazing over before Dodi Lukebakio went close from range. With both sides now sitting on two points from two matches, the prospect of either topping the group or heading home remains very much alive.

Iran are next up against Egypt at Seattle Stadium on Friday, 26 June, while Belgium take on New Zealand at the same time in Vancouver as Group G reaches its conclusion. This comes amid news that an unsavoury Lionel Messi foul has prompted a formal World Cup complaint to FIFA.
