Legendary horse racing jockey Frankie Dettori hospitalized after car crash

Retired iconic horse racing jockey Frankie Dettori has been hospitalized after a car crash Wednesday night in England in which he suffered broken ribs and a broken thumb, according to his agency.
Another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of a vehicle being driven by the 55-year-old in Newmarket, which resulted in the car spinning and flipping, per a statement from H Talent Management.
Police did not make any arrests, according to The Sun, and locals told the outlet that Dettori’s two-seat Smart Car had been flipped onto its roof.
“Frankie was taken to hospital, where he was found to have sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb. His injuries are still being assessed, and he remains in hospital for further scans and observations,” H Talent Management wrote. “Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him.
“His focus is now on resting and recovering.”
Dettori, a native of Italy, retired in February after one of the greatest careers of any jockey, although he is slated to return this September, according to ESPN.
He primarily competed overseas, with plenty of wins in England and France, although he enjoyed victories in Breeders Cup races in the United States.

Dettori previously endured another harrowing accident when he and another jockey survived their plan nose-diving in England in 2000, while the plane pilot died.
He suffered a broken right ankle in the crash.
“Patrick, the pilot, did a fantastic job and we are sure that if the plane had hit the dike we would have been killed for sure,” Dettori and Ray Cochrane said in a statement in 2000, per ESPN.
“We would like to express our sympathy to his family and say that we owe our lives to his skill and courage.”
