Why Did Adam Sandler Officiate Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding?

While the news that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are now officially married may not have been a surprise — with weeks of anticipation and clues about the event leaking out — the most surprising detail may have been the ceremony’s officiant: Adam Sandler.

A representative for Swift confirmed in a statement that the proceedings at Madison Square Garden had included Austin Swift, Taylor’s brother, who served as Swift’s “man of honor,” and Jason Kelce, who was his brother’s best man. The statement also said Sandler had officiated the ceremony, describing him as a friend.

Indeed, there are connections: Kelce appeared with Sandler, the actor and comedian, in a cameo role last year in “Happy Gilmore 2,” a sequel to Sandler’s 1996 hit about an unlikely blue-collar golf hero. Kelce, a star tight end with the Kansas City Chiefs, had posted on Instagram about the experience, along with a series of photographs of him and Sandler on set.

“Man this life is crazy!!” Kelce wrote. “Still so surreal I got this opportunity.”

Sandler also was a guest on “New Heights,” the podcast which Kelce co-hosts with his brother, in early 2025. “This is iconic,” Kelce, clad in a “Happy Gilmore” hat, said of Sandler’s appearance.

There were hints, too, of the comedian’s participation in the nuptials: Sandler was seen on Thursday at the Garden, with the British tabloid The Sun catching the star unloading a garment bag before a small rehearsal dinner held at a theater inside the garden.

Swift also referenced the movie “Happy Gilmore” in an interview last year with Zane Lowe, a disc jockey, saying the character of Happy Gilmore had partly inspired the lyrics of a love song, “Wish Li$t,” on her latest album.

“I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie ‘Happy Gilmore,’ but he has this happy place where he goes into this utopia,” Swift said, adding, “And that chorus of that song is me just describing what my happy place is.”
