Lena Dunham’s Racy Joke at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding Had Guests “Gasping”

Lena Dunham apparently delivered one of the most memorable moments of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s wedding reception with a dinner speech that reportedly had guests laughing — and audibly gasping.
The Girls creator, 40, was among the speakers during the couple’s Friday celebration, where she reportedly quipped that “American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn.” According to a Daily Mail insider, the joke drew “gasps and laughs” from the crowd, with Swift immediately declaring her longtime friend a “genius” afterward. Kelce, of course, is widely regarded as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history.
The moment wasn’t entirely surprising given the pair’s longtime friendship. Dunham and Swift have been close since the early 2010s, when Dunham was dating producer Jack Antonoff, and their relationship has remained strong ever since. Swift even served as a bridesmaid at Dunham’s 2021 wedding to musician Luis Felber.
Over the years, Dunham has repeatedly spoken about how protective she feels of the pop superstar.
“I’m always very careful to be protective of her in every single way,” she told The New Yorker in 2024. “Probably the two things I get asked most in life are ‘What is Taylor like?’ and ‘Can I have tickets to the Eras Tour?’ And usually my answer to both things is no.”
She continued by pushing back against the relentless scrutiny Swift often faces.
“She’s kind, she’s devoted, she’s introspective, she’s emotional, she’s funny as f**k. I guess my feeling sometimes is, Isn’t she giving us enough, guys?”
The filmmaker has also spoken candidly about how much Swift’s music has meant to her over the years, once describing it as her “church.”
“Even since before Taylor and I were friends, I just always had felt such a deep connection to her music,” she said.
“I’ve seen every tour she’s ever done. I love seeing a woman who’s not yet 40 being like, ‘Yes, I have a body of work.’ What I find inspiring is her acknowledgment of her own prolific expression.”
That admiration also found its way into Dunham’s 2026 memoir, Famesick, which includes a heartfelt dedication to the singer.
“TayTay — you sing the songs I wrote this book to, the stories that pulled these stories out of me, the music that makes the whole world feel seen. And yet somehow, miraculously, you also pick up every desperate call at every desperate hour.
“I love you so much and forever, for the reasons that everyone does and for reasons all my own.”
The two have shared plenty of public moments throughout their friendship. Dunham appeared in Swift’s 2015 “Bad Blood” music video and later joined her onstage during the 1989 World Tour stop at MetLife Stadium that same year. More recently, she attended an Eras Tour show at Wembley Stadium in 2024 before reuniting with Swift to watch Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs in December 2025.
Given that history, it’s perhaps fitting that Dunham wound up delivering one of the most talked-about moments from Swift and Kelce’s wedding celebration.
