Two Americans enter, one American advances.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are set for an all-American quarterfinal at Wimbledon on Tuesday morning, after both rallied their way into the quaterfinals on Sunday.

“Super happy to be in the quarters, finally,” Gauff said post-match. “I’m definitely hungry for more. But it’s a great accomplishment.”

Before Sunday’s win over Belinda Bencic, Gauff had never reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon — the only major tournament she had yet to make it that far. The All England Lawn Tennis Club was where a 15-year-old Gauff had her breakout tournament in 2019 as a qualifier, when she defeated Venus Williams in the first round and eventually reached the fourth round in her first major main draw.

Pegula arrives to the match — he first all-American ladies’ Wimbledon match between two top-ten seeds since 2009, when Serena and Venus Williams faced off in the final — having recovered from a set down in to fellow American Iva Jovic in their four-round faceoff.

Pegula has won 34 of her last 37 matches against her fellow Americans, dating back to October 2023.

Two of her losses in that span were to Gauff, who she occasionally partners with in doubles.

Gauff isn’t expecting any surprises.

“It will be the third flat hitter I’ve played in a row,” Gauff said. “The last two matches I’ve had definitely gave me prep for her.”

The ladies’ singles draw will see a first-time champion this year, as the last one standing, Barbora Krejcikova, lost to Karolina Muchova yesterday. Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Serena Williams were the others who lost earlier.
