How far will Disney go with live-action remakes of their popular animated movies? At least as far as the live-action Moana 2026 movie, which opens in movie theaters this weekend.

Directed by Thomas Kail (a theater director known for his collabs with Moana composer Lin-Manuel Miranda), with a screenplay written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, the 2026 Moana movie stars Australian actress Catherine Laga’aia in her feature film debut. That’s a tough break for Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the 2016 animated film, but at least they gave her an “executive producer” title on the live-action film in consolation.

Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson will return to his role as Maui, the braggadocios demi-god who accompanies Moana on her journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti, and save her people. This time around, The Rock rocks a long-haired wig that many internet users have dubbed as “cringe.”

The live-action Moana also stars Rena Owen, John Tui, Frankie Adams, and the voice of Jemaine Clement. Critics haven’t been kind to the film so far, calling it “bland” and “a generic beat-for-beat remake.” But hey, at least we know the songs are good. The live-action Moana is not streaming on Netflix, and most likely will never be streaming on Netflix. This is due to the fact that Moana is a Disney Pixar movie and will have a streaming home on the Disney-owned streamer, Disney+.

While a Toy Story 5 Disney+ release date has not yet been announced, we can make an educated guess as to when the movie will be streaming based on previous Disney releases.

One recent Disney movie, Zootopia 2, was released on premium video-on-demand about two months after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Disney+ a little over three months after opening in theaters. If the live-action Moana follows a similar release strategy, you may see Moana 2026 on digital platforms around September 2026, and streaming on Disney+ around October 2026.
