Devils star Nico Hischier rescues Swiss family from water in heroic moment

Nico Hischier was part of a rescue in his native country of Switzerland over the weekend.
While visiting his home country for part of summer break, the Devils captain helped local police in a rescue of a family in distress on the Aare River in Bern, Swiss news outlet 20 Minuten revealed.
A family of four, including two children, were in a small rubber boat and encountered trouble near a dam. Police found the family and went to assist, alongside Hischier.
Bern police confirmed “the police were finally able to pull the boat ashore using a throw bag, and the four occupants were rescued unharmed.”
Hischier helped the authorities get the family to the Engehalde weir footbridge so they could exit the treacherous water.
The family was reportedly “unable to leave the dangerous area on their own.”
Hischier assisted until police and an ambulance arrived. First responders then brought the family to safety using a throw bag, helping them avoid the “dangerous” Engelhade Weir Jetty.

One witness described Hischier’s actions as “heroic.”
Hischier, as he so often does on the ice, downplayed his impact.
“In this situation, everyone is grateful for support, and we were all relieved that no one was hurt in the end,” Hischier told 20 Minuten.
Devils team reporter Amanda Stein called it “the most Nico story of all time.”
The situation came just days after Hischier signed a five-year, $58.5 million contract extension with the Devils.
Hischier will remain in New Jersey through the 2031-32 season, and needs just four more goals to pass Bobby Holik and Travis Zajac for third on the all-time franchise goals leaderboard.
