‘The Five Star Weekend’ Ending Explained: Does Gigi Tell Hollis What She Did? Do Hollis and Jack End Up Together?

Darlene Love‘s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” fills your ears after you press play on Peacock‘s The Five Star Weekend, as we meet caterer, cookbook author, and food influencer Hollis Shaw (Jennifer Garner) baking up a slew (or a sleigh) of holiday treats. But the news she is about to receive is anything but sweet.

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for The Five Star Weekend, now streaming on Peacock.

Based on Elin Hilderbrand‘s novel of the same name (though sans the hyphen), The Five Star Weekend begins with Hollis — whose Hungry with Hollis account has launched her to stardom online — in the kitchen baking when the cops knock on her door, informing her that her husband Matthew (Josh Hamilton) has died in a car accident. Fast forward six months later, Hollis is still grieving, despite throwing herself back into work with a cooking segment on TODAY with Jenna Bush Hager.

After a tense admission to Hager that she “can’t do anything without crying” since the loss of her husband, Hollis is advised by her assistant Chelsea Lancaster (Vella Lovell) to host a weekend at her summer home in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and to invite one friend from each phase of her life. Hollis eventually decides to go for it, inviting her childhood friend Tatum (Chloë Sevigny), her college friend Dru-Ann Jones (Regina Hall), and her mom friend Brooke (D’Arcy Carden), plus Gigi (Gemma Chan), a pilot and follower of Hollis’ that she connected with online, bonding over losses they’ve each experienced (Gigi opened up about the passing of her mother, though lied about when it happened to connect with Hollis).

Hollis’ friends are surprised by how close Hollis has become with Gigi, especially considering how distant Hollis was when they all reached out to her following Matthew’s passing. But what they learn about Gigi’s connection to Hollis will shock them—and Hollis herself.

What did Gigi do?

The Five Star Weekend viewers learn fairly early on who Gigi really is, and how her ties to Hollis are deeper than what meets the eye. At the end of The Five Star Weekend Episode 1, “Friday: Arrivals,” we see Gigi anxiously retreat to her room and play back a voicemail from Matthew—yes, Hollis’ late husband Matthew!—that starts with the following: “Hi, my love. It’s me, Matthew. You’re probably already at the hotel. I’m headed to the airport.” Tears stream down Gigi’s face as she listens to the voicemail over and over.

Despite her role initially seeming like “the other woman” trope, viewers learn about the connection that Gigi and Matthew fostered, as well as the cracks in Hollis and Matthew’s relationship. Chan recalls early discussions with showrunner and EP Bekah Brunstetter and author Elin Hilderbrand about portraying Gigi, telling DECIDER that they “were really clear that they wanted Gigi to not be villainized, or like a two-dimensional kind of woman.”

“They wanted her to be flawed,” she added. “Obviously, she’s not perfect, she’s made mistakes. There are consequences. But she is just trying her best. She’s not a terrible person. That was really interesting and fun for me to play because there’s complexity and there’s nuance there, and then she gets to meet these amazing women who she’s drawn to, and she’s kind of longing for a connection with.”

While Sevigny teased with a laugh that Matthew is “the villain,” she noted that, like Gigi, he is “also a complex character.”

“You’re mourning this person, and yet he had also done a horrible thing to this woman,” she said. “I think that affairs happen, people fall in love. I think the show is also exploring that. Sometimes attraction and emotions get the better of you and when you’ve been in long relationships, it happens. Maybe they would’ve recovered from it. There’s so much to explore in this series and so much for so many people to relate to.”

Carden highlighted that this humanizing of Gigi was “one of [her] favorite things” about the character while reading Hilderbrand’s novel.

“When I read the book, I found myself rooting for her,” she said of Gigi. “Obviously I love Hollis and you want the best for Hollis, but every once in a while, I was really, really rooting for Gigi. I found that to be an interesting side of the story.”

After Chan quipped that that’s “very Brooke” of Carden to say, Sevigny noted the “duality” to the characters, explaining that “we all have our dark sides and our vulnerable sides.”

Does Gigi tell Hollis what she did?

As they say, the truth must come out… over the course of eight episodes. The first of the women to find out Gigi’s secret is Brooke, who in Episode 3, “Saturday Morning: Shopping in Town,” spots a cozy selfie of Gigi with Matthew on her phone.

Though Brooke confronts Gigi at the spa in Episode 4, “Saturday Afternoon: The Spa,” it is not until Episode 6, “Sunday Morning: Fun Surprise,” that Brooke confides in Dru-Ann and Tatum about the secret. After walking in on Gigi piercing Hollis’ ear, the three women decide to confront Gigi, serving up so many frustrated questions on the tennis court until Gigi breaks down in tears.

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” Gigi exclaims. “People look at me all the time and they don’t see me, and he did. And now he’s gone, and I’m vile. I know that’s all that I am. I’m fucking vile.”

Toward the end of Episode 6, Gigi attempts to come clean, telling Hollis that she has not been honest with her. However, Hollis cuts her off, insisting that she knows Gigi’s dishonesty was about the timeline of when her mother passed. After an ice cream truck arrives (courtesy of Hollis, of course), Hollis can’t find Gigi. Tatum, Brooke, and Dru-Ann try to steer her off the search, though Hollis thinks they’re only jealous of Gigi. The three ladies eventually reveal that Gigi was having an affair with Matthew.

In Episode 7, “Sunday Night: Make Your Own Pizza Party,” Hollis drives through a rainstorm to find Gigi. During the drive, she imagines Matthew riding shotgun, who reminds her that there were “signs” of his infidelity and their deteriorating relationship.

“And it wasn’t just me. Late at night, after I went to sleep, you would look up Jack,” he said of Hollis’ former flame (played by Timothy Olyphant), who she reunites with in Nantucket. “Looked at his new girlfriends, pictures of his mom, the fish he caught.”

Does Hollis forgive Gigi?

Once Hollis finds Gigi, Gigi confirms that she had a 10-month-long affair with Matthew, who would “meet [her] along [her] route” in cities like San Diego, Chicago, and Paris.

Hollis asks, “Did you love him?”

Gigi replies, “He made me feel safe.”

Hollis echoes, “Yeah, me too… Well, that’s that.”

That’s when Hollis drives away, leaving Gigi behind in the rain. Gigi ends up heading to the bar, where she finds Hollis’ daughter Caroline (Harlow Jane). As the two are bonding, Electra (Judy Greer), Judy’s nosy mom friend, recalls where she knows Gigi from: she once saw Gigi and Matthew leaving a restaurant in San Diego together, while Hollis was visiting Caroline at school. The revelation (and the alcohol) leads Gigi o vomit outside the bar. Caroline brings an inebriated Gigi home from the bar, meaning Gigi must stay the night.

The next morning, in Episode 8, “Monday Morning: Departures,” Gigi comes bearing gifts: coveted morning buns from Wicked Island Bakery. She admits she came to Nantucket “for all the wrong reasons,” and ultimately reveals what Matthew had told her in the rest of the voicemail she was listening to on repeat.

“He was going to choose you,” Gigi says. “He called me from the car when he was on the way to the airport. He was coming home to you, I swear. You just have to know that.”

Hollis checks the accident reports to confirm Gigi’s story, realizing that Matthew was “driving west,” home to her. Although Hollis tells Gigi that she is “going to forgive” her eventually and doesn’t want this “anger” in her life, Hollis urges Gigi to leave, gifting her some farewell toffee.

“One more thing,” Hollis says. “Don’t ever contact me again.”

Do Hollis and Jack end up together?

Ever since they lock eyes in the first episode, we knew that we hadn’t seen the last of Hollis and Jack’s relationship. Jack steps in to save the day throughout the series, bringing Caroline home from jail after she was caught hooking up with Dylan (Henry Eikenberry) at the top of a lighthouse, and even helping clean Hollis’ gutters. After catching him in the act of the latter, Hollis and Jack can no longer deny their feelings for each other, and spend the night together. Hollis wakes up in bed alone, but Jack hasn’t abandoned her. He’s in the kitchen cooking up some breakfast for her.

While they both agreed their night together was “great—”five stars,” in Jack’s words—Hollis determined that she’s “not ready” just yet to dive into something real with Jack.

“I want to see what this is,” she tells Jack. “But I’m also really tired and sad. And there is a part of me that doesn’t want to be naked in front of anyone ever again.”

Jack, like the perfect rom-com man he is, assures Hollis that they can keep their clothes on and “not overthink” what happened. At the end of Episode 8, Jack finds Hollis on the beach, proposing that they exchange numbers, just in case they ever want to “overthink” things together. Hollis proposes that she make dinner for him, as they stroll together on the beach.
