How NFL lineman became Taylor Swift’s first bodyguard

It likely wasn’t on Jasen Esposito’s bingo card for this to be his first job after a professional football career.
The former Bills offensive lineman became Taylor Swift’s first bodyguard when his NFL career ended in 2005 and he went on to share the story on Ross Tucker’s podcast on Wednesday.
It all started with a call from Scott Swift, the mega popstar’s dad.
“He calls me up and asked me what I was doing Saturday afternoon…” Esposito said. “I’m gonna need you to stand by Taylor for her autograph signing hour” for what the former NFLer recalled was a local country music station.
Being free, Esposito said yes and “stood next to Taylor the whole time.”
He went on to explain from his understanding that someone tried to hug the young star previously. So, Scott and Taylor wanted a “big intimidating guy” to be there.
“Scott thought of me right away,” Esposito said before adding that Swift’s first tour bus was there and she performed a few songs for the crowd. He also said he went to work another of Swift’s gigs in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Esposito went undrafted out of Kutztown University and eventually signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Patriots before he spent two years on the Bills’ practice squad.
Ending his playing career at 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds, Esposito was perfect for the job.
Scott Swift had a large hand in his daughter’s early career. He would arrange performances, appearances and would submit demo tapes before Swift’s eventual debut album “Taylor Swift” came out in 2006 at 16 years old.
She kept performing at fairs and would travel to local country stations around the country to build an audience.
Swift also performed the national anthem before Game 3 of the 2008 World Series between the Phillies and Rays at Citizens Bank Park with a silver sparkly guitar in front of over 40,000 fans.
Soon after, Swift released her second album “Fearless” in November of that year.
As Swift’s popularity grew, demands for what she needed skyrocketed and more bodyguards have been brought in throughout the years.
Swift has since gone on to be one of the most popular musical artists of her generation, winning 14 Grammy Awards, and she recently married Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden during the Fourth of July weekend.
