Vanity Fair vet George Wayne pens column on wild ’90s stay at the Chateau Marmont that included Kelly Cutrone and ‘godmama’ Ivana Trump

Former Vanity Fair columnist George Wayne has penned a piece for Hampton Sheet Magazine in which he recalls a wild stay at the Chateau Marmont’s Suite 56 in April of 1992 with star stylist Kelly Cutrone.

“I was excited to be back in Hollywood, especially at the legendary Chateau Marmont. My ‘Godmama’ Ivana Trump was modeling in a charity fashion show for the French avant-garde designer Thierry Mugler to benefit the AIDS Project Los Angeles organization,” Wayne recalls. “Studying the pool from the kitchen, I immediately knew the glamorous, pale, ancient creature swathed in black — and wearing the biggest sunglasses — was the legendary downtown New York socialite and part-time fur designer, Larissa Jarzombek.”

When he goes out to greet the “fashion dinosaur” she “whines” to a pal by the pool to order her a, “how do you say it? A Bloody Mary,” and is told, “The hotel doesn’t have a liquor license.”

“‘In that case, I’ll have a little wine,’  Larissa whined further, allowing nothing or no one to impede her request,” recalls Wayne of the fuzzy scene.

By night, the columnist is dining at ’90s LA hotspot Bikini — which famed foodie Ruth Reichl called in a 1992 review: “It’s not cheap, it doesn’t look like any other restaurant on earth–and his food certainly doesn’t taste like anything you’ve ever eaten. You may love Bikini and you may hate it, but you will not be indifferent.”

The famed critic also surmised of the Santa Monica Japanese restaurant: “It is thrilling food for a sophisticated public at a time when most of us aren’t eager to be challenged..”

Meeting up with the onetime West Coast Editor of Allure, “a funny, smart, and loony woman named Peggy Orr,” writes Wayne, “Peggy had the most interesting things to offer as conversation — from Druid queens and shamans to women of the Nippon culture. ‘By the age of 29, if a Japanese woman isn’t married, she’s considered stale bread,’ she crackled as she did another line of caviar. I almost spewed my Herradura tequila across the room.” (Hmmm… It certainly was another time?)

“Peggy also had the sweetest dollops of vintage Hollywood gossip,” Wayne writes. “’You wanna know why Mimi Rogers really divorced Tom Cruise?’ she whispered, then proceeded to tell me all the salacious details. She even gave updates on the marriage ups and downs of Demi and Bruce. Peggy was on a roll until it suddenly dawned on the hosts that maybe it was time to call it a night, some 15 minutes after midnight.”
