Wayne Rooney gives brutal verdict on World Cup final’s first-ever halftime show
Wayne Rooney kept it short but not so sweet.
The Manchester United legend wasn’t at all dazzled when watching the World Cup final’s first-ever halftime show that featured Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira, Ted Lasso and The Muppets.
In fact, he thought “it was crap.”
While working with the BBC Sport crew, Rooney was asked his favorite moment of the halftime show as the game between Argentina and Spain remained scoreless.
He was quick to say, “I’ll be honest, when it finished.”
“I like a lot of them artists, but I thought it was crap.”
His response left his panelists speechless. Gabby Logan, Micah Richards and Joe Hart all struggled to come up with a response.
“I did, honestly,” Rooney doubled down.
“It just didn’t get me going,” he went on. “I like Bieber. I like Shakira. It was too flat.”
He was praised for his take on social media by fans.
“Timeless comment,” one X user wrote.
“well done wayne rooney for not being scared to say out loud what the rest of us are saying. we just want to watch football,” another posted.
A user went on to call him a “national hero” for the comment.
“104 games and Wayne Rooney waits for the World Cup final to deliver the best analysis of the tournament,” another posted.
Rooney is part of the network’s broadcast for the World Cup final, which went into extra time at MetLife Stadium before Spain defeated Argentina 1-0.
Argentina went down to 10 players after Enzo Fernández received a red card during stoppage time of regulation.
The game was largely in Spain’s offensive favor, and Argentina was kept in the game thanks to goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
