Klay Thompson gives eye-opening answer when asked about Warriors reunion
Klay Thompson wouldn’t mind a reunion with the Golden State Warriors.
During an autograph session at Fanatics Fest over the weekend, Thompson told fans multiple times he is open to finishing out his career back in the Bay Area.
A video emerged on Instagram from @Gabe_einhorn asking Thompson if he would go back to the Warriors, to which Thompson replied, “Shoot, I don’t know. I got one year on my deal. It’d be nice to end it in Golden State.”
Another video emerged on Sunday afternoon of a fan telling Thompson, “We need you on the Warriors, buddy,” leading to Thompson responding by saying, “Never say never.”
Recently, NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Dallas Mavericks are interested in parting ways with Thompson via a trade or buyout. Thompson has one more year left on a 3-year, $50 million contract he signed in 2024.
Stein added that the Miami Heat have had interest in bringing him down to South Beach via trade, and having him play alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
While Thompson clearly has an interest in returning to Golden State next season, there have been no reports on whether the feeling is mutual by the Warriors front office.
With Thompson set to turn 37 next season, the end of his career is near.
During his time in Golden State from 2011-2024, Thompson was one hal of the “Splash Bros” alongside Steph Curry as the Warriors won four NBA championships.
While in Golden State, Thompson was one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA and was a five-time NBA All-Star.
In Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, Thompson tore his left ACL, causing him to miss the rest of the final and the next season.
On his way to recovery, he suffered another major setback by rupturing his right Achilles tendon during a pickup basketball game in November of 2020.
Thompson returned to the basketball court in 2021, but he never looked the same, as he eventually was reduced to a reserve role.
The Warriors have been considered a favorite to make the biggest move of the offseason as they’re in pursuit of acquiring LeBron James.
They also re-signed center Kristaps Porzingis to a two-year, $40 million contract extension.
