John Calipari built his career landing five-star recruits. Tyrese Maxey just helped the 76ers land LeBron James, taking a page from his former coach.

Maxey was in the middle of a workout when news broke that James had agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers. He quickly turned on the camera, screamed in celebration and gave himself a new title.

“I’m like Coach Cal,” Maxey wrote on the video.

Honestly, the comparison works. Calipari became famous for convincing elite players to join his programs.

Maxey does not have a recruiting staff or a collection of national championship banners, but he reportedly played a major role in convincing the 41-year-old James to choose Philadelphia.

The two are represented by Klutch Sports, and Maxey remained in contact with James throughout his long free-agency process. His efforts helped the Sixers beat out Cleveland, Miami, Golden State and Minnesota for the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

No wonder Maxey was screaming.

Philadelphia can now roll out a starting lineup featuring Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, James and Joel Embiid. That group brings scoring, passing, athleticism and plenty of playoff experience, putting the Sixers firmly in the NBA title conversation.

James and Maxey could be especially dangerous in transition.

According to The Athletic, they ranked first and second in fast-break points last season. Maxey scored 382, while James finished with 343.

Of everything Calipari taught Maxey during his lone season at Kentucky, recruiting may have been the most unexpected lesson.

Years later, Maxey used it to help Philadelphia land one of the biggest names in basketball history.
