On Aug. 4, Michigan voters have a chance to help save the Democratic Party by choosing Rep. Haley Stevens over Abdul El-Sayed as Dems’ nominee for the US Senate.

The far left has been on a roll in primaries across the nation, not just in deep-red House districts but in some statewide contests; now is the time for sanity to triumph.

No question that El-Sayed is the left’s choice: He’s endorsed by Bernie Sanders, AOC and the party’s entire Israel-hating wing, as well as the local Working Families Party.

An MD who never pursued a license to practice medicine, he’s spent his adult life in academia and government; aside from demonizing the Jewish state, his core issue is Medicare for All, the Sanders prescription for nationalized health care, and he also calls to abolish ICE.

Stevens is a different kind of apparatchik, working in party and politics-adjacent policy jobs for her entire career.

She’s always been solidly pro-Israel, while emphasizing other issues like support for restoring America’s industrial might and other centrist Democratic priorities; she’s endorsed by establishment figures such as Sen. Chuck Schumer — and just got a key endorsement from popular Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Most important: El-Sayed is utterly vile.

After the foiled terrorist attack on a Jewish pre-school at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield this spring, he staged a press conference with extremist podcaster Hasan Piker to justify the atrocity: “Hurt people do hurt people, and the circumstances happening 6,000 miles away can affect the lives that we live here.”

This, because the would-be killer was Lebanese and Israel was fighting to defend itself from Hezbollah.  

June saw him take the stage at the opening of a local mosque with Fadhel Al-Sahlani, a radical imam and Holocaust denier operating out of Queens, to offer “hearty congratulations” to the mosque’s new imam Hassan al-Qazwini, who has eulogized Hezbollah fighters and made openly antisemitic remarks. 

On Obama-bro podcast “Pod Save America,” he said he’d “vote for Hamas over Israel every single time”; his campaign sent out a fundraising email on the second anniversary of Oct. 7 falsely suggesting that Israel started the violence; and on and on. 

He’s also a hypocrite, slamming any doctor who refuses to take Medicaid patients as racist when his own wife does precisely that; denouncing the pay gap for black women when he earned far more as Wayne County health director than the black women who had the job before and after him.

The race is tight: El-Sayed is the national far left’s new great hope after the implosion of Graham Platner in Maine, and the donations are pouring in.

And while Stevens has more support among traditional Dem groups in Michigan (e.g., blacks and working-class, for starters), El-Sayed unites both the usual lefty white college grads with a large Muslim population.

Ironically, the moderate Dem’s biggest reason for hope is that Michigan has open primaries, so voters not registered as Democrats can turn out to help save the party.

We’re rooting for her . . . though if El-Sayed gets the nomination, Republican Mike Rogers will have a great chance to win in November, which of course is the other way to crush the far left.
