“SLTPD was notified by an El Dorado County Sheriffs Sergeant that a male subject had lowered the American Flag from the front of the SLTPD station to the ground and was trying to light it on fire. Officers quickly arrived and detained a 36 year old South Lake Tahoe resident,” the police department posted on Facebook.

He had also just been released from jail for being in “Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Public Intoxication after he was reported to have been shooting arrows at the Y” on Saturday.

The suspect has been booked into the El Dorado County Jail on felony attempted arson with $100,000 bail.

Attempts to burn the American flag are rare, though instances became more visible during the George Floyd protests in 2020.

Protesters burned the flag while violently smashing the windows of police vehicles in Downtown Los Angeles in May 2020.

A protest in San Diego County also involved looting, graffiti, and setting an American flag ablaze.

The demonstrators set the flag on fire before raising it up the flag pole.
