At the beginning of every college football season, the age-old adage of “hope springs eternal” rings true for every fanbase.

Every team is 0-0 and all their goals for the coming year are in front of them.

Many programs, coaches, and fanbases all believe they have a chance to win a national title, and in a mathematical sense they aren’t wrong.

I’m here to tell you, however, that it’s rarely that wide open and, during any given year, only a handful of teams can actually win the whole thing.

This year, I’ve identified eight teams who I believe can hoist a national championship trophy.

Through some combination of returning production, transfer portal talent, and elite coaching, one of these eight teams will more than likely be the last one standing next January.

Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State Buckeyes could probably get penciled into this list every year while Ryan Day is their head coach and their talent acquisition stays at the level it’s currently at, but this year in particular feels like a big one in Columbus.

Coach Day has assembled a staff consisting largely of former NFL coaches and coordinators, and the addition of offensive coordinator Arthur Smith feels like a particularly noteworthy one to keep an eye on.

The Buckeyes have been recruiting at a top-five level for the past several cycles, and have supplemented that with a small but elite transfer portal class, including bolstering their defense with the likes of Alabama defensive linemen Qua Russaw and James Smith as well as Florida State safety Earl Little Jr.

On offense, Ohio State returns what may end up being the best quarterback-wide receiver tandem in the country, as Julian Sayin looks to build on a quietly brilliant 2025 while Jeremiah Smith could be argued as the best overall player in college football.

An early test on the road against Texas as well as a rematch of the Big Ten Championship in Bloomington against the Hoosiers will tell us everything we need to know about how real the Buckeyes are in 2026.

Texas Longhorns

Speaking of those Longhorns, Texas will be looking to right the wrongs from a disappointing 2025 heading into this year.

Last season, the Horns were a popular preseason national championship pick, but a less than ideal start had them on the outside looking in by season’s end.

Texas will likely be near the top of the preseason polls again this year, but unlike in 2025, they know what they have in signal caller Arch Manning.

Manning’s first half of last season was forgettable, but by November, you could argue he blossomed into one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

He has the weapons he needs to be truly elite, with receiver Ryan Wingo returning and wideout Cam Coleman coming over from Auburn, so there won’t be any excuses for another sputtering start out of the gate in ’26.

Texas’ defense will be among the best in the country, and veteran leaders like edge rusher Colin Simmons and linebacker Rasheem Biles (both preseason All-Americans) will bolster a fearsome unit.

There has never been a dearth of talent in Austin, but coach Steve Sarkisian may finally have his most complete team since stepping foot on the 40 Acres, and that alone has people starting to feel like it’s 2005 in Central Texas again.

Miami Hurricanes

The Miami Hurricanes were a fourth quarter Carson Beck interception away from winning the national championship in January, but the scary thing is they might be even more dangerous in 2026.

Head coach Mario Cristobal has built a machine in Coral Gables, and the Canes have the most talented roster they’ve had since the early 2000s.

That’s not to say they don’t have to replace some absolute studs, particularly along the lines of scrimmage, but Cristobal and co. have recruited well enough in the trenches that this may be a matter of reloading rather than rebuilding.

On the offensive side of the ball, Miami has an embarrassment of riches for offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson to tinker with.

The Canes return wide receiver Malachi Toney and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. from their CFP runner-up squad last season, and they added Duke wide receiver Cooper Barkate, who was one of the most coveted pass catchers in the portal from this past offseason.

The real prize, though, was Duke quarterback Darian Mensah.

Miami will be paying Mensah a pretty penny, but he will be worth every cent of his exorbitant paycheck, as the redshirt junior may end up being the most talented signal caller Cristobal has had while in South Florida.

The schedule is forgivable, even by ACC standards, but a rematch on the road against Notre Dame will separate the Canes as contenders or pretenders.

Indiana Hoosiers

It’s crazy that I made it halfway through the list without mentioning the defending national champions, but I think coach Curt Cignetti and crew almost like it that way.

Last year, no one outside of the locker room at Memorial Stadium thought this team had a chance to win the whole thing, but the Hoosiers won’t be sneaking up on anyone this year.

Cignetti doesn’t have a star-studded roster like Miami, Texas, or Ohio State, but that’s never stopped him before (obviously) and the talent in Bloomington is only getting better.

The Hoosiers signed a top-ten portal class, and although it was a relatively small class (17 total players) there were some gems to be found.

Quarterback Josh Hoover comes to Indiana by way of TCU, and will look to be the next big thing in Cignetti and offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan’s system.

The last transfer quarterback they took ended up becoming a Heisman winner and number 1 overall NFL Draft pick, so Hoover will hope to continue the tradition.

Former Michigan State wide receiver Nick Marsh will give Hoover an elite target to throw to and will pair nicely with returning wideout Charlie Becker, who had a brilliant 2025 campaign averaging nearly 20 yards per catch.

Indiana likely won’t be tested until the midway point of the season in a home game against Ohio State, and by then the team should be firing on all cylinders for the second half of the year.

LSU Tigers

Of all the teams on this list, the LSU Tigers are the wild card and have the widest range of potential outcomes to consider.

It’s no secret the Bayou Bengals went out and got Lane Kiffin to be their head coach, who can be a bit of a wildcard in his own right.

But, when Kiffin is on, he’s one of the best in the business at scoring points and talking smack in the process.

Paired with Kiffin is a pair of elite coordinators in Charlie Weis Jr. (OC) and Blake Baker (DC) as well as a rumored $40 million roster.

LSU also landed the number one transfer portal class and has studs at plenty of key positions, so conventional wisdom says they will be contenders right out of the gate.

The truth of the matter is, it doesn’t always work out that way, and if you told me the Tigers won a national championship or went 7-5, I’d find both outcomes equally believable.

They have the firepower and an elite coaching staff, but they also play a pretty loaded schedule, starting with Clemson Week 1 and getting two more Playoff teams from last season (Ole Miss and Texas A&M) before the calendar even flips to October.

I could easily see them stumbling out of the gate and imploding, but I could also see them catching fire early and riding that wave to the promised land.

LSU can win a national championship in 2026. The question is will they?

Oregon Ducks

Things have gone about as well as one would want when it comes to coach Dan Lanning’s time in Eugene.

The 40-year-old head coach is entering his fifth season with the Ducks, and his resume looks pretty stacked by any metric.

He’s 48-8, captured the Big Ten title in Oregon’s first year in the league, and has won 10 games or more every year he’s been the coach there.

But he’s missing that one thing to make his list of accomplishments feel more complete: a national championship.

While 2026 isn’t championship or bust in the Pacific Northwest, some fans are starting to question if Lanning will ever get it done as a head coach, especially after last season’s beatdown at the hands of Indiana in the CFP Semifinals.

This would be the year for him to slay that dragon, though, as Oregon will once again have one of the most talented teams in the country.

The Ducks and Lanning have been an absolute Death Star on the recruiting trail, and this season could be the culmination in all that hard work on the talent acquisition front.

Veteran signal caller Dante Moore eschewed the NFL Draft to come back and lead his team to a natty, and he will have two absolute weapons to throw the football to this coming year.

Sophomore Dakorien Moore, a former five-star recruit in his own right, had a very good freshman year but will be looking to take the next step in 2026, while senior Evan Stewart is back and 100% healthy and ready to show anyone who forgot about him why he was one of the most coveted players in the country when he transferred from Texas A&M two years ago.

On defense, the Ducks boast a trio of preseason All-Americans in defensive back Brandon Finney Jr., linebacker Teitum Tuioti, and defensive lineman A’Mauri Washington who will look to continue the trend of elite defensive play in Eugene.

The talent will have to rise to the top, because Lanning will be replacing both coordinators, as DC Tosh Lupoi and OC Will Stein departed for head coaching jobs at Cal and Kentucky, respectively.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

When Brian Kelly departed South Bend for Baton Rouge nearly five years ago, I thought Notre Dame had seen their peak as a football program in the modern era.

Always the bridesmaid but never the bride, I figured new head coach Marcus Freeman would, at best, keep them in that 10-win/CFP first round exit realm.

Little did I know the former defensive coordinator turned full time head coach would prove me so wrong.

Two years ago, Freeman had the Irish on the doorstep of a national championship, and after a minor setback in 2025, the Golden Domers look to be right back in the thick of things.

This might be Freeman’s most talented group of players yet, and it all starts with quarterback CJ Carr.

The offseason buzz around this young man has been Manningesque, and his growth over the second half of last season should be enough proof that those words aren’t just hot air.

The Irish have also started recruiting at a championship level, and that should start to bear fruit as early as this season, as Freeman’s efforts on the trail have considerably raised both the floor and ceiling of talent on this roster.

Having to replace two first-round draft picks at running back in Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price will be a tall ask, but I think the sum will be greater than the parts for Notre Dame in 2026 and, aside from their opener against Wisconsin, the team will be able to ease into their schedule before their ultimate test on Nov. 7 against Miami.

Georgia Bulldogs

No list of national championship contenders is complete without Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs, but they aren’t making this roster of teams on the merits of their logo alone.

Georgia recruits better than almost anyone in the country, and the 2026 edition of this roster will feature a ton of former big-time prospects who waited their turn and were developed the old-fashioned way.

That includes quarterback Gunner Stockton, who has a ton of experience and a very solid 2025 campaign to build off of.

The third-team All-SEC selection will have a familiar face in offensive coordinator Mike Bobo coaching him up and will be able to lean on a fantastic running back in Nate Frazier as well as a trio of all-conference offensive linemen.

The defense will look to return to form as a vintage Kirby Smart unit, led by defensive backs KJ Bolden and Ellis Robinson, both of whom were tabbed as preseason first-team All-SEC selections by the media.

The Dawgs have a tricky six-game stretch in the middle of the season, starting at home against Oklahoma and featuring road games against Alabama and Ole Miss along the way.

It remains to be seen just how high the ceiling will be for this Georgia team in 2026, but they have the requisite talent and a coach who has been to the mountaintop twice in recent history, so count the Bulldogs out at your own risk.
